Sunni Islam () is the largest branch of Islam, followed by 85โ€“90% of the world's Muslims. Its name comes from the word ''Sunnah'', referring to the tradition of Muhammad. The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims arose from a disagreement over the succession to Muhammad and subsequently acquired broader political significance, as well as theological and juridical dimensions. According to Sunni traditions, Muhammad left no successor and the participants of the Saqifah event appointed Abu Bakr as the next-in-line (the first caliph). This contrasts with the Shia view, which holds that Muhammad appointed his son-in-law and cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor. The adherents of Sunni Islam are referred to in Arabic as ("the people of the Sunnah and the community") or for short. ''Rasm'' ( ar, ุฑูŽุณู’ู…) is an Arabic writing script often used in the early centuries of Classical Arabic literature (7th century โ€“ early 11th century AD). Essentially it is the same as today's Arabic script except for the big difference that the ''Arabic diacritics'' are omitted. These diacritics include i'jam (ุฅูุนู’ุฌูŽุงู…, สพIสฟjฤm), consonant pointing, and tashkil (ุชูŽุดู’ูƒููŠู„, tashkฤซl), supplementary diacritics. The latter include the แธฅarakฤt (ุญูŽุฑูŽูƒูŽุงุช) short vowel marksโ€”singular: แธฅarakah (ุญูŽุฑูŽูƒูŽุฉ). As an example, in ''rasm'', the five distinct letters are indistinguishable because all the dots are omitted. ''Rasm'' is also known as Arabic skeleton script. History In the early Arabic manuscripts that survive today (physical manuscripts dated 7th and 8th centuries AD), one finds dots but "putting dots was in no case compulsory".
