Sunet Swanepoel
SUNET is the Swedish University Computer Network. SUNET provides high-speed Internet access to academic institutions in Sweden. The current incarnation of the network, Sunet C, provides 100 Gbit/s links between the cities hosting universities. It replaces the older network, OptoSunet, based mainly on 10 and 40 Gbit/s links. SUNET's upstream network is the Nordic NORDUnet. SUNET is governed by a board appointed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). In addition to the board there is a technical reference group and a development group, as well as people working at the participating universities. SUNET did operate one of Sweden's largest FTP archives, mirroring extensive useful material of 'academic' interest, similar to the UK Mirror Service hosted by the University of Kent. In physics, the wavelength is the spatial period of a periodic wave—the distance over which the wave's shape repeats. Education in Sweden is mandatory for children between ages 5/6 and 15/16 depending on when on the year they were born. The school year in Sweden runs from mid–late August to early/mid–June. The Christmas holiday from mid–December to early January divides the Swedish school year into two terms. Preschool is free for all families. The year children turn six they start the compulsory preschool class (), which acts as a transition phase between preschool and comprehensive schools. Children between ages 5/6 and 15/16 attend comprehensive school where a wide range of subjects are studied. All students study the same subjects, with exception for different language choices. The history of Internet in Sweden can be considered to have begun in 1984, when the first Swedish network was connected to the Internet in Gothenburg. In the past, however, were data links between some colleges and universities with access via modem and UUCP to the European part of the Internet. Patrick Falstrom was a mathematics student in Stockholm in the early 1980s when he was hired to help build and test the infrastructure for the ARPA Internet. TAT-14
TAT-14 was the 14th consortium transatlantic telecommunications cable system. In operation from 2001 to 2020, it used wavelength division multiplexing. The cable system was built from multiple pairs of fibres—one fibre in each pair was used for data carried in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. Although optical fibre can be used in both directions simultaneously, for reliability it is better not to require splitting equipment at the end of the individual fibre to separate transmit and receive signals—hence a fibre pair is used. TAT-14 used four pairs of fibres—two pairs as active and two as backup. Each fibre in each pair carried 16 wavelengths in one direction, and each wavelength carried up to an STM-256 (38,486,016 kbit/s as payload).
