Sunderland Symphony Orchestra
The Sunderland Symphony Orchestra is a semi-professional orchestra, symphony orchestra based in Sunderland, England. The orchestra was created by City of Sunderland, Sunderland City Council in 1999 to commemorate the Millennium celebrations, Millennium. History To create a long-term commemoration of the Millennium, the three councillors for the Thornholme Ward of Sunderland, John Lennox, Winifred Lundgren and Mark Greenfield planned to create a symphony orchestra for the community. A public meeting was called on 1 October, 1999, at which it was decided to establish 'The City of Sunderland Millennium Orchestral Society' (CoSMOS) with musicians at that meeting forming the core membership of the new orchestra. Rupert Hanson was appointed music director, musical director and conducting, principal conductor, and he developed the orchestra in consultation with society members. Grimethorpe Colliery Band
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. Along with the Black Dyke Mills Band, the band became the first to perform at the Proms. Grimethorpe Band achieved worldwide fame after appearing in the film ''Brassed Off''. History The year after the band's formation saw it enter its first competition at Belle Vue in Manchester.. Its first radio broadcast was in 1932 and from 1941 to 1951 it was on UK national radio every month. George Thompson was musical director from the early 1950s until 1972 during which time the band won the British Open Contest for the first time.
