Sun Of Jamaica
"Sun of Jamaica" is a song performed by German group Goombay Dance Band, written by Ekkehard Stein and Wolfgang Jass. The song was released at the end of 1979, and subsequently included on their debut album, ''Sun of Jamaica''. The lyrics recount the narrator's desire to visit Jamaica after seeing ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' as a boy. He explicitly mentions Marlon Brando in the lyrics, thus referring to the 1962 film version. When he visits, he falls in love with a woman, and vows to later return to be with her. The song was highly successful across Europe, reaching number 1 in no less than five countries. Goombay Dance Band
Goombay Dance Band is a German band created in 1979 by Oliver Bendt, named after a small bay on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Their music has a distinctive sound (somewhat similar to Boney M.), which is a mixture of soca, calypso and western pop. The group enjoyed greatest commercial success at the beginning of the 1980s, spawning such number 1 hits as "Sun of Jamaica", "Seven Tears" and "Aloha-Oe, Until We Meet Again". Goombay Dance Band built up a fan base across Europe and proved very popular in South Africa too, where "Sun of Jamaica" and "Aloha-Oe" entered the charts. History The band released the song "Sun of Jamaica" at the end of 1979. It topped the German single charts for nine weeks in 1980. Their next single was "Aloha-Oe, Until We Meet Again", based on a Liliuokalani's composition " Aloha ʻOe". ''Virgin Islands'' is an album by the German andean new age band Cusco. It was released originally in 1983 and is currently available from the Prudence label under the title ''Virgin Island''. This album contains three tracks which later appeared on the 1990 release Water Stories on Higher Octave Music (''Sun of Jamaica'', ''Seychelles'' and ''Java''). The album also contains a track called ''Alcatraz'', but the music is completely different from the track of the same name on Desert Island and Water Stories, and is actually the original mix of the track ''Bermudas'' on the following Island Cruise album. Goombay Dance Band Songs
Goombay is a form of Bahamian music and a drum used to create it. The drum is a membranophone made with goat skin and played with the hands. The term Goombay has also symbolized an event in the Bahamas, for a summer festival with short parades known as ‘Junkanoo’. The goombay name has also evolved to become synonymous with local Afro-Caribbean music related to calypso. In The Bahamas, its most famous practitioner in modern times was Alphonso 'Blind Blake' Higgs, who performed at the Nassau International Airport for many years. The Goombay Dance Band help to popularise the musical style in the West in the early 1980s. Their single, " Seven Tears", reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in March 1982.
