Sun City Challenge
The Sun City Challenge is a golf tournament on the Sunshine Tour. It has been played annually since 2007. From 2007 to 2011 it was called the Nashua Golf Challenge and was held at the Gary Player Country Club, although from 2007 to 2009 the second round was played at Lost City Golf Course. From 2012 to 2015 it was held at Lost City Golf Course, before returning to the Gary Player Country Club from 2016. Sun City, North West
Sun City is a luxury resort and casino, situated in the North West Province of South Africa. It is located between the Elands River and the Pilanesberg, about 140 km northwest of Johannesburg, near the city of Rustenburg. The complex borders the Pilanesberg National Park. It is made up of a number of themed sub-resorts with hotels on each, including the original Sun City Resort, ''The Cabanas'', ''The Cascades'' and the ''Lost City'' (The Palace). History Beginning Sun City was developed by the hotel magnate Sol Kerzner as part of his Sun International group of properties. It was officially opened on 7 December 1979, then located in the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. The Sunshine Tour represents the highest level of competition for male professional golfers in the region. The tour is based predominantly in South Africa with other events being held in neighbouring countries, including Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia and Namibia. As usual, the tour consisted of two distinct parts, commonly referred to as the "Summer Swing" and the "Winter Swing". Tournaments held during the Summer Swing generally have much higher prize funds, attract stronger fields, and until 2012 were the only tournaments on the tour to carry world ranking points, with some events being co-sanctioned with the European Tour. Haydn Porteous
Haydn Porteous (born 8 July 1994) is a South African professional golfer. Porteous won many amateur tournaments in South Africa, including the South African Stroke Play in 2012 and 2013. He was the top-ranked South African player when he turned professional in 2013. Porteous has played on the Sunshine Tour and the Challenge Tour. He won the 2015 Barclays Kenya Open on the Challenge Tour. In January 2016, Porteous won his maiden European Tour title with a two-stroke victory at the Joburg Open. Dean Burmester
Dean Burmester (born 2 June 1989) is a South African professional golfer who plays in the LIV Golf League, as well as having status on the European Tour and Sunshine Tour. He formerly played on the PGA Tour. Early life Burmester was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe but represents South Africa in golf. His father, Mark Burmester, played international cricket for Zimbabwe while his mother Michelle holds (as of 2022) the women's course record at Royal Harare Golf Club, his home course. Career Burmester has won eight times on the Sunshine Tour, including the 2015 Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open. Keith Horne
Keith Weller Horne (born 9 June 1971) is a professional golfer from South Africa. Horne was born in Durban and had a successful amateur career. In 1993, Horne won a Silver Medal at the World Games in Spain. He turned professional in 1996. He is an alumnus of Westville Boys' High School. Shaun Norris (golfer)
Shaun Patrick Norris (born 14 May 1982) is a South African professional golfer. Professional career Norris plays on the Sunshine Tour where he has won twice. He won the inaugural Africa Open in 2008 and the Nashua Masters in 2011. He also began playing on the European Tour in 2011 after graduating from qualifying school. He has also played on the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour, where he has won five times including the Japan Golf Tour Championship Mori Building Cup Shishido Hills in 2017. Oliver Bekker
Oliver Bekker (born 11 December 1984) is a South African professional golfer. Professional career Bekker plays on the Sunshine Tour where he has won seven times. He won the 2011 Northern Cape Classic, the 2012 Dimension Data Pro-Am, the 2013 Telkom PGA Pro-Am and the 2016 Sun City Challenge. He won three times in 2017, the Zambia Sugar Open, the Lombard Insurance Classic, and the Sun Wild Coast Sun Challenge. In April 2021, Bekker lost in a four-man playoff at the Limpopo Championship.
