Sumner High School is a historic building located in Sumner, Iowa, United States. Built in 1901, the Neoclassical style building replaced the old 1876 school building. The 2½-story brick structure is built on a raised stone basement and capped with a hip roof and cupola. An addition was built onto the north side of the building in 1915, and the gymnasium was added in 1924. This was Sumner's only school building until 1953 when a new grade school was built. with A new high school building was completed in 1961. The local school district continued to use the building until 1988, and the gymnasium continues to be used by the district. Sumner Academy of Arts and Science is a nationally ranked magnet school in Kansas City, Kansas which prepares students for high-level academic and creative pursuits. Named for abolitionist Charles Sumner, it started in 1905 during a period of racial tension as a segregated school for black ("Negro") students, which offered vocational training, but emphasized college-preparatory training. Located at 1610 N. 8th Street, the current architecturally significant complex began with its Art Deco core in 1937, but has been repeatedly expanded. The segregated Sumner High School closed in 1978, converting at that time to its present high-challenge magnet program. Tangipahoa Parish School Board is a school district headquartered in Amite City, Louisiana, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States. The district serves Tangipahoa Parish. Robert L. Frye (1927-2011), the Republican nominee for state education superintendent in 1972, was a former member of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board. The Board has a long history of racial discrimination in the hiring of teachers. In 1975, it was ordered to ensure one-third of the teaching staff were Black. Both the Board and the Court ignored the mandate for more than thirty years. During the period from 1998 to 2008, the Board hired fewer Black teachers than any other school system in the state. In 2010, a second ruling strengthened the first. In 1994, the Board adopted a requirement that a disclaimer be read aloud before any instruction on the theory of evolution. Local parents sued. Charles Sumner School
The Charles Sumner School, established in 1872, was one of the earliest schools for African Americans in Washington, D.C. Named for the prominent abolitionist and United States Senator Charles Sumner, the school became the first teachers' college for black citizens in the city and the headquarters of its segregated school system for African American students. It currently houses a small museum, a research room, art exhibits, and the archives of the District of Columbia Public Schools. Construction and naming The Charles Sumner School was built on land that had previously been used as a school site by the Freedmen's Bureau, created after the Civil War to provide support for freed slaves.
