Sumar, Netherlands
Sumar ( nl, Suameer) is a village in the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel, in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It lies south of Burgum, on the , and had a population of approximately 1,382 in January 2017. There is a windmill in the village, De Hoop. History The village was first mentioned in 1453 as suwamer, and means "southern lake". Su (south) was added to distinguish between Eastermar and . Sumar developed in the late middle ages as a collection of spread out farms around the church. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1769 as a replacement of an earlier church. Sumar was home to 457 people in 1840. Around 1900, the heath in the area was cultivated. The dairy factory De Harste was built 1908 and is a combination of rational and Jugendstil architecture. Burgum
Burgum is the largest and administrative town of the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel, in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Friesland. It had a population of 10,058 inhabitants in January 2017. On 1 January 1989 the official name of the village was changed from ''Bergum'' to ''Burgum.'' This was done to match the Frisian name of the village. Bergum is the current name in Dutch. The name Burgum is suggestive of an area of higher altitude than the surrounding area. The province of Friesland is bordered in the north by the Wadden Sea. In ancient and medieval times, habitation in Friesland occurred only in those areas which were elevated above sea level (for example in Burgum) or on artificially built mounds known as terp, weird or ward. These mounds were areas of refuge in times of flooding. The artificial mounds became redundant after the building of the dykes on the border of the Wadden Sea. Bintje
Bintje is a middle-early ripening potato variety bred in the Netherlands by the Frisian schoolmaster K.L. de Vries in 1904 from (Munstersen x Fransen) and marketed for the first time in 1910. The name of the potato, a diminutive of Benedict, was borrowed from one of his former students. Bintje plants are medium-sized and erect, with purplish stems, dark green leaves and white flowers. Bintje produces large oval-shaped tubers with pale yellow skin and yellow flesh. It has shallow eyes. The sprouts are purplish. This high-yielding variety is widely grown in Europe and North Africa. ''Jugendstil'' ("Youth Style") was an artistic movement, particularly in the decorative arts, that was influential primarily in Germany and elsewhere in Europe to a lesser extent from about 1895 until about 1910. It was the German counterpart of Art Nouveau. The members of the movement were reacting against the historicism and neo-classicism of the official art and architecture academies. Eastermar
Eastermar ( nl, Oostermeer) is a village in Tytsjerksteradiel municipality in the province Friesland (''Fryslân'' in West Frisian language, West Frisian) of the Netherlands. It had around 1,575 citizens in January 2017. History As early as 4000 BC there were nomads in this area. An important archaeological discovery was made at Burgumer Mar, a lake to the northwest of Eastermar. This discovery is known as the Leien-Warten Kompleks. Also found around Eastermar were mammoth teeth and gold rings, now in the Regional Museum in Burgum. The first farmers settled on the higher grounds east of the Burgumer Mar. Around 1200, the first stone church was built here, which was later known as the Former Protestant church of Eastermar, Protestant church of Eastermar. De Hoop, Sumar
De Hoop ( en, The Hope) is a smock mill in Sumar, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1867 and is in working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument. History A windmill that had stood on this site had before 1867. In that year, a corn and pearl barley mill built on this site for Geert Hammens de Jong of Hurdegaryp, Friesland. The mill changed hands a number of times, and was in the ownership of Jouke Hedzers Looijenga of Garyp, Friesland. The mill was destroyed by fire on 19 December 1881. Losses amounted to ƒ9,300. The brick base survived and was advertised for sale in 1882. In that year, permission was sought for a replacement mill and steam engine. This was denied because the proposal did not conform to regulation then in force. The miller's house and surviving base were purchased at auction by Jacob Jans Formsma for ƒ2,250. Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as ''postcodes'', are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters.
