Parmeliaceae
The Parmeliaceae is a large and diverse family of Lecanoromycetes. With over 2700 species in 71 genera, it is the largest family of lichen-forming fungi. The most speciose genera in the family are the well-known groups: '' Xanthoparmelia'' ( 822 species), ''Usnea'' (355 species), ''Parmotrema'' ( 255 species), and ''Hypotrachyna'' (262 species). Nearly all members of the family have a symbiotic association with a green alga (most often ''Trebouxia'' spp., but '' Asterochloris'' spp. are known to associate with some species).Miadlikowska, J. ''Sulcaria spiralifera'' is a species of fruticose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. It is found in the northwestern United States, where it grows as an epiphyte, hanging from a variety of tree species in open or shaded maritime forests. Taxonomy The species was first formally described in 1977 by lichenologists Irwin Brodo and David Hawskworth as a species of '' Bryoria''. It was transferred to the genus ''Sulcaria'' in 2014 by Leena Myllys, Saara Velmala, and Trevor Goward. Using DNA analysis and molecular phylogenetics, they also determined that ''Bryoria pseudocapillaris'', another taxon described by Brodo and Hawskworth in 1977, was actually the same species as ''Sulcaria spiralifera'', and placed the former taxon in synonymy with the latter. Jan Bystrek (17 June 1934 – 20 February 2020) was a Polish botanist and professor of natural sciences. He was employed at the Department of Systematic and Geography of Plants at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University from 1956 until 2004. He published research in many fields, including botany, floristry, lichenology, systematics, environmental protection, biogeography, ecology, bioindication, and nature and landscape protection. He was involved in popularizing knowledge about nature and ecological education. Education Jan Bystrek was born in Grodzany on 17 June 1934. In 1951 Bystrek graduated from the secondary school in Bychawa. After graduating from high school, he started studies in Kraków at the AGH University of Science and Technology, which he had to leave after two months for financial reasons. A fruticose lichen is a form of lichen fungi that is characterized by a coral-like shrubby or bushy growth structure. In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A.
