Suippe
The Suippe () is an long river in Marne and Aisne départements, in north-eastern France. Its source is at Somme-Suippe. It flows generally northwest. It is a left tributary of the Aisne, into which it flows at Condé-sur-Suippe. Isles-sur-Suippe (, literally ''Isles on Suippe'') is a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France. Geography The commune is traversed by the Suippe river. History Isles-sur-Suippe, Insula super Suppia at the early 11th century, is a village located between two branches of the Suippe, on the road from Reims to Rethel. The relay station The royal relay station of Ysle was founded mid-17th century, the postal road from Paris to Sedan, started in 1654, had a mandatory halt there; located between the halts of Reims and Rethel-Mazarin, it was an important link of the road to Sedan, a then predominant town of the Ardennes. At that time, the Galand family settled in Ysle and initiated a postmaster dynasty. Suippes
Suippes () is a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France. It was part of the so-called ''la Champagne pouilleuse'', a region battered by conflict during World War I. In the early months of the war, British soldiers were deployed here and were to march to Châlons-sur-Marne to fight the First Battle of the Marne. In October 1918, the United States also deployed a brigade in the area and was assigned as Fourth French Army reserve. The commune was pillaged and razed by the Germans in the same way they attacked Heiltz-le-Maurupt, Marfaux, Fromentieres, and Esternay. Boult-sur-Suippe
Boult-sur-Suippe (, literally ''Boult on Suippe'') is a commune of the Marne department in northeastern France. Geography The commune is traversed by the Suippe river. Population History Boult-sur-Suippe is about from the Belgium border, and during World War I the village was positioned along the Western Front (World War I), and the German troops established a hospital in the village. A cemetery in the village was used by the Germans between October 1914 and October 1918, and was perhaps directly linked to the battles of Reims, also called the Second Battle of the Marne and surrounding forts. Recent archaeological investigations have discovered over 500 graves in the cemetery, some of them identified as German and English troops, a few who were listed as Missing in action.Urbanus, Jason 2016. Dontrien
Dontrien () is a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France. Geography Dontrien is a small village in the north of the Marne department, about 35 km from Reims and 40 km from Châlons-en-Champagne. On its territory, Dontrien has two rivers, Suippe and Py, which are full of fish. Since the 1970s, Baloré, a small beach on the Suippe has been successful. History There are different possible origins for the name, such as "''don de rien''" ("gift of nothing"), i.e. a gift given during the Middle Ages from a Lord to one of his vassals at a time when Dontrien was a forest with no land suitable for cultivation. In 1247, there was an outbreak of leprosy. In 1905, 955 hectares were used by farmers and 300 hectares for forest. The village comprised 325 people with 107 citizens in 109 houses. The Aisne ( , , ) is a river in northeastern France. It is a left tributary of the Oise. It gave its name to the French department of Aisne. It was known in the Roman period as Axona. The river rises in the forest of Argonne, at Rembercourt-Sommaisne, near Sainte-Menehould. It flows north and then west before joining the Oise near Compiègne. The Aisne is long. Its main tributaries are the Vesle, the Aire and the Suippe. The Battle of the Axona was fought near there between the Romans and the Belgae in 57 BC.
