Sugar River State Trail
The Sugar River State Trail is a long, , recreation rail trail in Wisconsin. This trail connects four communities: New Glarus, Monticello, Albany and Brodhead. The limestone-surfaced trail is on an abandoned railroad bed, and is used for bicycling, hiking, and snowmobiling. The trail follows the course of the Little Sugar and Sugar River and includes several trestle bridges. The Sugar River State Trail is part of the Aldo Leopold Legacy Trail System, linking with the Badger State Trail near Monticello. It also hosts a portion of the Ice Age Trail. The north end of the trail is at a parking lot next to the New Glarus Depot on Railroad St. in downtown New Glarus (). Rail trails are typically constructed after a railway has been abandoned and the track has been removed, but may also share the right of way with active railways, light rail, or streetcars (rails with trails), or with disused track. As shared-use paths, rail trails are primarily for non-motorized traffic including pedestrians, bicycles, horseback riders, skaters, and cross-country skiers, although snowmobiles and ATVs may be allowed. Badger State Trail
The Badger State Trail is a rail trail in south central Wisconsin. The trail leads from the Wisconsin – Illinois state line to Madison passing through, from south to north, Monroe, Monticello, Belleville and Fitchburg. Near Monticello, the trail passes through the long, unlit Stewart Tunnel constructed in 1887. The trail was officially opened July 8, 2007. History Rail history The main route of the trail follows a former rail line that was originally built by the Chicago, Madison and Northern Railroad and opened in 1887, with the first official train traveling the full route in February 1888. Ice Age Trail
The Ice Age Trail is a National Scenic Trail stretching in the state of Wisconsin in the United States. The trail is administered by the National Park Service, and is constructed and maintained by private and public agencies including the Ice Age Trail Alliance, a non-profit and member-volunteer based organization with local chapters. Route The trail roughly follows the location of the terminal moraine from the last Ice Age. As the route traverses the moraine, it sometimes meanders into areas west of the moraine, including the Driftless Area in southwestern Wisconsin. The trail passes through 30 of Wisconsin's 72 counties, from the northwestern part of the state to the Lake Michigan shoreline in the east. Aldo Leopold Legacy Trail System
The Aldo Leopold Legacy Trail System is a system of 42 state trails in the state of Wisconsin, covering a total of 1728 miles. It was named after conservationist and influential University of Wisconsin professor Aldo Leopold. The trail system was created on November 20, 2007, when Governor Jim Doyle signed Senate Bill 161, and dedicated on June 4, 2009.
