Sugar Land Independent School District
Sugar Land Independent School District #17 was a school district headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas. History It was created under a state law that was approved and became law on March 18, 1918. Under state law, there was a 7-person board, and at least two members were required to be women. The first school board president was M. R. Wood, the designer of Sugar Land's first school, and Mary Anna Collins Woods was the first superintendent. Sugar Land's first public school had opened in 1912. In the years 1924-1930 Carrin Foreman (died March 1, 1932), the sister of Percy Foreman, was the district superintendent. When she married she gave up her position. It was dissolved in 1959 when it merged with the Missouri City Independent School District to form the Fort Bend Independent School District. Voters approved the consolidation on April 18 that year. Sugar Land is the largest city in Fort Bend County, Texas, United States, located in the southwestern part of the metropolitan area. Located about southwest of downtown Houston, Sugar Land is a populous suburban municipality centered around the junction of Texas State Highway 6 and Interstate 69/ U.S. Route 59. The Texas Historical Commission is an agency dedicated to historic preservation within the state of Texas. It administers the National Register of Historic Places for sites in Texas. Percy Foreman
Percy Eugene Foreman (June 21, 1902 – August 25, 1988) was a criminal defense attorney from Houston, Texas. Foreman was born near Bold Springs, Texas. Foreman moved to Livingston, Texas when he was six years old. He was the son of Ransom Parson Hill Foreman and William Pinckney (Rogers) Foreman, a former sheriff of Polk County, Texas. Percy Foreman attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia for one year, graduated from the University of Texas Law School in 1927, and was admitted to the Texas Bar on January 17, 1928. He went on to become one of the best known trial lawyers in Texas, with the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association creating the Percy Foreman Lawyer of the Year Award in 1984. The Fort Bend Independent School District, also known as Fort Bend ISD or FBISD, is a school district system in the U.S. state of Texas based in the city of Sugar Land. Imperial Sugar is a major U.S. sugar producer and marketer based in Sugar Land, Texas, with sugar refinery operations in California, Georgia, and Louisiana. Sugar Land High School
Sugar Land High School was a senior high school in Sugar Land, Texas and a part of the Sugar Land Independent School District. Children who were white and of groups not black attended this school. Circa the 1940s many alumni of Sugar Land High attended colleges and universities. The Kempner family arranged to have the campus built. In 1959 Sugar Land High merged with Missouri City High School to form Dulles High School. This occurred as Sugar Land ISD and Missouri City Independent School District merged, becoming the Fort Bend Independent School District. Lakeview Elementary School is on the former site of Sugar Land High. Athletics In 1952 and 1953 the baseball relay team won state championships. In 1958 the girls' basketball team made it to the Texas State Tournament.
