Sudhirkumar Saxena
Professor Sudhirkumar Saxena (1923 – 2007 in India) was a tabla artist Guru and professor. He learnt the tabla performing art for years from Ustad Habeebuddin Khan, the doyen of the Ajrada gharana. Pandit Saxena was the first drummer in India to have worked as professor of tabla at a centre of higher learning. He retired from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 1983 as head of its music department, after serving the institution for thirty-three years. In his younger days (1945-1995), he participated in most of the major music conferences of the country as a tabla accompanist to many front-ranking musicians and dancers. Spending his formative years in Meerut, he also graduated in Political Science. He in his era, played with most of the stalwarts of Indian Classical Music at that time. Ajrada Gharana
Ajrara gharana or Ajrada gharana is one of the six main traditional schools in tabla drum. The distinctiveness of this Gharana is the use of complex Bols and Meend. Pakhawaj bols are rare. The stress is on Ad and Barabar laya. It specializes in the three-time pattern. The position of the left drum is not changed, but its face is touched with the thumb. History This school was founded in the nineteenth century by Miru Khan and Kallu Khan, disciples of Sitab Khan of the Delhi gharana, at the Ajrara village, in Uttar Pradesh. Playing style Clarity of sound is made possible by the propensity for using the index and middle fingers in the traditional manner. The Ajrara gharana style includes more complicated bol patterns than the Delhi gharana. This is because the third fingers are brought into play as well. Indian classical music is the classical music of the Indian subcontinent.
