Suburbs are listed here if they are inside the Sydney metro area, and are listed in the New South Wales Geographical Names Register as being suburbs. For this list, the boundaries of the Sydney metro area are defined as the Hawkesbury/Nepean River in the north/north west, and then the outer boundaries of the City of Penrith, Camden Council, the City of Campbelltown and Sutherland Shire. Sydney ( ) is the capital city of the state of New South Wales, and the most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Mosman is a suburb on the Lower North Shore region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Mosman is located 8 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Mosman. Localities In February 1997, a notice was published in the Government Gazette by Mosman Council advising that they had assigned ''Mosman'' as the only suburb in the Mosman Local Government Area. Ambarvale is a suburb of south-western Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Ambarvale is located 55 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Campbelltown and is part of the Macarthur region. The suburb is predominantly residential and contains a mix of public and private housing. History Aboriginal culture The history of the region begins over 40,000 years ago and is contained in the continuing culture of the Tharawal people. The surrounding land still contains reminders of their past lives in rock engravings, cave paintings, axe grinding grooves and shell middens. Allawah, New South Wales
Allawah is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Allawah is 16 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Allawah lies in the local government area of the Georges River Council. The postcode is 2218, which is shared by the neighbouring suburb of Carlton. History The name "Allawah" is Aboriginal in origin, from a local term meaning "make your abode here" or "remain here". It is thought that the Aboriginal clan of the Tharawal people most prominent in the St George area, the Gameygal or Kameygal – the people of Kamay (Botany Bay), lived in and around the area. Allambie Heights, New South Wales
Allambie Heights is a suburb of Northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 17.5 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. History Allambie is an Aboriginal word that means "peaceful place". An estate by that name was subdivided and auctioned in 1918. It is likely that a "goat track" that roughly follows the existing Allambie Road today was used by the Aboriginal people to access the ocean beaches at nearby Manly. Alfords Point is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Alfords Point is 28 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, within the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. Alfords Point shares the postcode of 2234 with neighbouring suburbs of Menai, Bangor and Illawong. Alfords Point is on the southern bank of the Georges River. Airds, New South Wales
Airds is a predominantly residential suburb of Sydney. Houses within the suburb are owned by Housing NSW. History Governor Lachlan Macquarie named the region Airds, after the Scottish family estate of his wife Elizabeth. Airds appeared in land grant lists, and referred to almost the entire area between Glenfield and Gilead. The name fell into disuse as Campbelltown and other settlements along the valley floor came to be known by their individual names after the 1820s. In January 1975, tenders for the first homes in the Housing Commission's 'Kentlyn' subdivision were called but the name Airds was not approved until May 1976. Like many public housing estates in Sydney, Airds was constructed on American Radburn principles designed to separate traffic from pedestrians. As a result, houses in the suburb did not face roads, which was later found to create enormous problems relating to crime and passive surveillance in the suburb. Agnes Banks is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Agnes Banks is 68 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government areas of the City of Penrith and City of Hawkesbury. Acacia Gardens is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, 40 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Blacktown. Abbotsford is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Abbotsford is 10 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Canada Bay. Abbotsbury, New South Wales
Abbotsbury is a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 39 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. Abbotsbury is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. Most of the suburb's estates were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s, although a few acres of undeveloped land in the north-west area was subdivided and developed in the early 2010s.
