Submarine Arm
The Submarine Force ( vi, Binh chủng Tàu ngầm), is an armed service of the Vietnam People's Navy which deals with submarine warfare. The force is made up of 6 Russia, Russian made Kilo-class submarine, Kilo-class submarines. Currently, the force consists of a single unit: 189th Submarine Brigade. History In 2009, the VPN ordered 6 Kilo-class submarine submarines from Russia. The total value of the contract was 4.3 billion United States dollar, USD. The contract also includes the training of Vietnamese sailors and the construction of a class-1 standard submarine crew training center at Cam Ranh Bay. On 29 May 2013, the VPN officially established the submarine force and the creation of the 189th Submarine Brigade at Cam Ranh Bay. The Vietnam People's Navy (VPN; vi, Hải quân nhân dân Việt Nam), or the Naval Service (), also known as the Vietnamese People's Navy or simply Vietnam/Vietnamese Navy (), is the naval branch of the Vietnam People's Army and is responsible for the protection of the country's national waters, islands, and interests of the maritime economy, as well as for the co-ordination of maritime police, customs service and the border defence force. History Pre–Modern Period Vietnam War On 19 July 1946, Acting President of Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) Huỳnh Thúc Kháng signed into law a decree establishing the modern Vietnamese navy.
