Sub Pop 200
''Sub Pop 200'' is a compilation released in the early days of the Seattle grunge scene (December 1988). It features songs (many of them first releases and otherwise unattainable) from Tad, The Fluid, Nirvana, Steven "Jesse" Bernstein, Mudhoney, The Walkabouts, Terry Lee Hale, Soundgarden, Green River, Fastbacks, Blood Circus, Swallow, Chemistry Set, Girl Trouble, The Nights and Days, Cat Butt, Beat Happening, Screaming Trees, Steve Fisk, and The Thrown Ups. Many of these bands went on to be influential in the early 1990s and onwards. Most notable of these were Nirvana, Soundgarden, Green River (who spawned Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone and later Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam), Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney. The cover is an illustration by comics artist Charles Burns, who was regularly used by Sub Pop for covers and posters. The Walkabouts
The Walkabouts were an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984. The core members were vocalist Carla Torgerson and vocalist and songwriter Chris Eckman. Although the rest of the line-up changed occasionally, for most of the time the other members were Michael Wells, Glenn Slater and Terri Moeller. The band drew inspiration from folk and country music, particularly Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young and Johnny Cash, but also from other types of artists and musical styles such as Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, French chanson and Jacques Brel. Their sound was typically rich, with string arrangements and keyboards in addition to the standard rock instruments. The Walkabouts achieved commercial success and a strong fanbase in Europe, where they had done promotion and extensive touring starting from the early 1990s. Spank Thru
"Spank Thru" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain. It appears on the compilation album '' Sub Pop 200'', released in December 1988. Though rarely performed live beyond the first few years of the band's existence, the song is significant in that it helped lead to the formation of Nirvana by helping convince bassist Krist Novoselic to start a band with Cobain. Novoselic specifically referred to the song as "the first Nirvana song" in the liner notes to the live compilation album '' From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah'', released in October 1996. Charles Burns (cartoonist)
Charles Burns (born September 27, 1955) is an American cartoonist and illustrator. His early work was published in a Sub Pop fanzine, and he achieved prominence in the early issues of '' RAW''. His graphic novel '' Black Hole'' won the Harvey Award. Career Comics Charles Burns' earliest works include illustrations for the Sub Pop fanzine, and '' Another Room Magazine'' of Oakland, but he came to prominence when his comics were published for the first time in early issues of '' RAW'', the avant-garde comics magazine founded in 1980 by Françoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman. Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Temple Of The Dog
Temple of the Dog was an American rock supergroup that formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. It was conceived by vocalist Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as a tribute to his friend, the late Andrew Wood, lead singer of the bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The lineup included Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass guitar (both ex-members of Mother Love Bone and later Pearl Jam), Mike McCready (later Pearl Jam) on lead guitar, and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden and later Pearl Jam) on drums. Mother Love Bone
Mother Love Bone was an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1988. The band was active from 1988 to 1990. Frontman Andrew Wood's personality and lyrics helped to catapult the group to the top of the burgeoning late 1980s/early 1990s Seattle music scene. Wood died only days before the scheduled release of the band's debut album, ''Apple'', thus ending the group's hopes of success. The album was finally released a few months later. Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington, in 1984 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Beat Happening is an American indie pop band formed in Olympia, Washington in 1982. Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis, and Bret Lunsford have been the band's continual members. Beat Happening were early leaders in the American indie pop and lo-fi movements, noted for their use of primitive recording techniques, disregard for the technical aspects of musicianship, and songs with subject matters of a childish or coy nature. Cat Butt
Cat Butt was a Seattle, Washington rock group, formed in 1987. Initially, the band did a short West Coast tour, and then went on to record their first full-length album, ''Journey to the Center Of'', which was produced by Jack Endino of Skin Yard. To promote the album, the band did a large U.S. tour, before disbanding in late 1990. Although not as successful as other Sub Pop bands, they maintained a loyal cult following in the Pacific Northwest. Girl Trouble (band)
Girl Trouble is a garage rock band formed in 1983, composed of three musicians from Tacoma, Washington and one from Spokane, Washington. History The band played their first show in 1984, and signed to Olympia's K Records label soon afterwards, on which they released two singles ("Riverbed" and "Old Time Religion") in 1987. One of their recordings, "Gonna Find A Cave" written by Jimmy Radcliffe and Buddy Scott, made an appearance on the ''Sub Pop 200'' compilation alongside tracks by Nirvana and Soundgarden. Various albums followed on different independent labels. Blood Circus (band)
Blood Circus was a short-lived band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1988 that has been described as sludge metal or grunge. Rock journalist Ned Raggett writing in AllMusic describes the band's music as "rough and ready, sludgy guitar rock with a bad attitude". History The band's first release was a single, 1988's "Two Way Street"/"Six Foot Under", on Sub Pop. Both Mudhoney and Nirvana performed their first shows in Seattle opening for Blood Circus at the Vogue in 1988. In 1989 Sub Pop released the band's first and only album, a five-track EP called '' Primal Rock Therapy'' which, despite being now recognised as a milestone record of that time and place, was at the time panned by the critics and ignored by the public.
