History and founding William Colgate, an English immigrant to America and devout Baptist established a starch, soap, and candle factory on Dutch Street in New York City under the name William Colgate & Company in 1806. A fabric softener (American English) or fabric conditioner (British English) is a conditioner that is applied to laundry during the rinse cycle in a washing machine to reduce harshness in clothes that are dried in air after machine washing. In contrast to laundry detergents, fabric softeners may be regarded as a kind of after-treatment laundry aid. A wrinkle releaser is a similar, more dilute preparation meant to be sprayed onto fabric directly. Mechanism of action Machine washing puts great mechanical stress on textiles, particularly natural fibers such as cotton and wool. The fibers at the fabric surface are squashed and frayed, and this condition hardens while drying the laundry in air, giving the laundry a harsh feel. Adding a liquid fabric softener to the final rinse (rinse-cycle softener) results in laundry that feels softer. Downy, also known as Lenor in Europe, Russia and Japan, is a brand of fabric softener produced by Procter & Gamble that was introduced in 1960. Lenor is a brand name of fabric softener and dryer sheets, also produced by P&G, sold in Europe, Russia and Japan. Lenor fabric softener had entered China in 2007 but was subsequently discontinued. Scent beads under the brand Downy have been sold in China since December 2017. Plans to rebrand Lenor as Downy in the UK were dropped in 2002. Snuggle is a brand of fabric softener sold by Henkel North American Consumer Goods in the United States and Canada. The brand was introduced in 1983 by Unilever. The product is available in sheets or liquid (in concentrate and ready-to-use forms). In September 2008, Vestar Capital Partners acquired the North American (United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico) laundry business of Unilever, which included the Snuggle, Wisk, All, Surf, and Sunlight brands. The former Unilever businesses were combined with Huish Detergents, Inc. to form the Sun Products Corporation. On June 24, 2016, Henkel Consumer Goods Inc., a subsidiary of Henkel AG & Co.
