Bien De Interés Cultural
A Bien de Interés Cultural is a category of the heritage register in Spain. The term is also used in Venezuela and other Spanish-speaking countries. The term literally means a "good of cultural interest" ("goods" in the economic sense) and includes not only material heritage (cultural property), like monuments or movable works of art, but also intangible cultural heritage, such as the Silbo Gomero language. Some ''bienes'' enjoy international protection as World Heritage Sites or Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. History In Spain, the category of ''Bien de Interés Cultural'' dates from 1985 when it replaced the former heritage category of '' Monumento nacional ''(national monument) in order to extend protection to a wider range of cultural property. The category has been translated as "Cultural Interest Asset". ''Monumentos'' are now identified as one of the sub-categories of ''Bien de Interés Cultural.'' Castro culture ( gl, cultura castrexa, pt, cultura castreja, ast, cultura castriega, es, cultura castreña, meaning "culture of the hillforts") is the archaeological term for the material culture of the northwestern regions of the Iberian Peninsula (present-day northern Portugal together with the Spanish regions of Galicia, Asturias, and western León) from the end of the Bronze Age (c. 9th century BC) until it was subsumed by Roman culture (c. 1st century BC). El Bierzo
El Bierzo (; ; gl, O Bierzo) is a ''comarca'' in the province of León, Spain. Its capital is the town of Ponferrada. Other major towns are Bembibre and Villafranca del Bierzo, the historical capital. The territory of El Bierzo includes most of the upper basin of the Sil river. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides, which makes this area remarkably isolated from all neighbouring lands. History In pre-Roman times the region was populated by the Astures, a Hispano-Celtic Gallaecian people. Numerous Roman mining sites are still visible in the area, one of the most spectacular being Las Médulas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Romans also imported grapevines, and wine production thrived in the region until the propagation of ...
