Stuart Russell (footballer)
Stuart Russell (16 July 1906 – 16 July 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Russell was initially recruited from the Cobram Football Club in the Goulburn Valley Football Association in 1926. Russell returned to Essendon in 1931 via the Barooga Football Club from the Murray Football League for three senior appearances before playing with the Hawthorn Football Club The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). Captain Stuart Hugh Minto Russell (18 January 1909 – 30 October 1943) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. Early life Stuart Hugh Minto Russell was born on 18 January 1909 to Sir Charles Lennox Somerville Russell and Lady Russell (née Elliot) from Crooksbury Hurst in Surrey. For his education he attended Rugby School. Member of Parliament 1935 general election Russell stood as Conservative candidate in the Parliamentary constituency of Darwen in Lancashire at the 1935 General Election. He stood to become a Member of Parliament (MP) against Liberal Party leader (and sitting MP) Herbert Samuel and a Labour candidate. The local party chairman, Colonel Felix Knowles, telegraphed Stanley Baldwin to query the Liberal Party statements that Baldwin would like to see Herbert Samuel returned as MP. Stuart Edward Russell (born 29 May 1963) is a Welsh former rugby union international. Russell, a Nairobi-born lock, attended Burford School in Oxfordshire and played for London Welsh. Capped once for Wales, in a 1987 win over the United States, Russell was the first London Welsh player to debut for Wales since Clive Rees back in 1974. He moved to Bishop's Stortford in 1988, but was forced to retire from top level rugby within a year due to an eye injury, having twice suffered a detached retina.
