Stuart B. Carter
Stuart Barns Carter (April 25. 1906 – June 12, 1983) was a Virginia lawyer, farmer and businessmen who also served as the Democratic legislator representing Botetourt and Craig Counties: first as a delegate in the Virginia General Assembly and later as a State Senator from the 20th District. A lifelong Democrat, Carter helped lead his party's progressive faction, particularly as they opposed the Byrd Organization's policy of Massive Resistance to racial integration in Virginia's public schools. Early life and education Carter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Charles Dale Carter and his wife Sarah Barns. Widowed when Stuart was an infant, Sarah remarried John S. Pechin and moved to Buchanan, Virginia. He had a half-brother Richard S. Pechin, five years younger than himself. Virginia's 20th Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. It has been represented by Republican Bill Stanley since 2012; prior to 2011 redistricting, Stanley represented the 19th district. Geography District 20 is based in Virginia's western Southside, incorporating all of Henry County, Patrick County, Martinsville, and Galax, as well as parts of Carroll County, Franklin County, Halifax County, Pittsylvania County, and the City of Danville. The district overlaps with Virginia's 5th and 9th congressional districts, and with the 5th, 6th, 9th, 14th, 16th, and 60th districts of the Virginia House of Delegates. It borders the state of North Carolina. Greyledge is a historic home and national Historic district (United States), historic district in Botetourt County, Virginia. It encompasses 13 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 2 contributing structures, as well as woods and cropland. Although less than a mile from Interstate 81, the house seated on a knob 1200 feet in altitude is not visible from the interstate highway, nor is the highway visible from the house. Purgatory Mountain is visible to the west of the house, which has views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the south and east. Purgatory Creek drains much of the property and flows into the James River several miles south in the town of Buchanan, Virginia, Buchanan.
