Sts. Sergius And Herman Of Valaam Chapel
Sts. Sergius and Herman of Valaam Chapel (russian: Св. Сергий и Герман капеллы Валаам) is a historic Russian Orthodox chapel in Ouzinkie, Alaska. The chapel is named for the Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam. It was built in 1898 by Bishop Tikhon, who located it over the grave of Father Herman, the first Russian Orthodox clergyman to be canonized for service in Alaska, and who has been considered the patron saint of Alaska. It is approximately in plan and on its roof has a small, relatively recently added onion-shape supporting a high cross. An altar section and a vestibule section were added later, completing out a customary three-section design of Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska. Ouzinkie, Alaska
Ouzinkie (, in Alutiiq, russian: Узинки), is a hamlet on Spruce Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 161, down from 225 in 2000. Geography Ouzinkie is located at (57.923, -152.502). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of , of which is land and (21.48%) is water. Climate Demographics Ouzinkie first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as the unincorporated village of "Oozinkie." All 45 of its residents were Creole (Mixed Russian and Alaskan Native). In 1890, it reported as "Uzinkee" and included Yelovoi Village. All 74 residents were Creole. It did not appear again until 1920 when it reported as "Ouzinkee." In 1950, the name was changed to "Uzinki." In 1967, it was incorporated as Ouzinkie, and has returned under that name in every census since 1970. Sergius Of Valaam
Saint Sergius of Valaam () was a Greek monk and wonderworker credited with bringing Orthodox Christianity to Karelian and Finnish people. Conflicting church traditions place him possibly as early as the 10th century or as late as the 14th. His feast day is celebrated on June 28. Church legends about St. Sergius of Valaam were not committed to writing until the 18th century. In these writings, Sergius is described as an Athonite monk sent by the Byzantine Emperor to enlighten the heathen tribes of Karelia with the light of the Christian faith. He traveled along the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks, passing the Rus' towns of Kiev, Novgorod and Staraya Ladoga. He arrived on the northern shores of Lake Ladoga, and soon moved to Valaam island, where he would spend the rest of his life preaching.
