Strømme Foundation
The Strømme Foundation ( no, Strømmestiftelsen) is a Norwegian volunteer development organization that was established on September 21, 1976. The foundation provides assistance to poor people in the Global South to pull themselves out of poverty through microfinancing. The vision of the Strømme Foundation is a world without poverty. Its head office is in Kristiansand. Activity The Strømme Foundation conducts long-term development work with local partner organizations in the Global South. By giving people, among other things, knowledge and skills, access to small loans, and saving opportunities, the foundation helps make it possible for poor people to improve and build their lives so that they can get by without charitable assistance. The Norwegian Christian Student and School Association (Norwegian: ''Norges Kristelige Student- og Skoleungdomslag'' or NKSS), is a Christian youth organization in Norway. Members refer to NKSS as "The team" (Norwegian: Laget). NKSS was founded in 1924 by Lutheran theologians Carl Fredrik Wisløff and Ole Hallesby. It works in schools and universities to make Jesus known to students. There are around 200 registered groups, in secondary, high school, and universities. Norwegian Missionary Society
The Norwegian Missionary Society or the Norwegian Mission Society ( no, Det Norske Misjonsselskap, NMS) is the first and oldest missionary organization in Norway. It was started by a group of approximately 180 Stavanger residents in August 1842, to spread Christianity to other people, mainly in Africa. Hans Paludan Smith Schreuder was its first missionary, leaving for the Zulu Kingdom in 1843. Hald International Center
Hald International Center ( no, Hald internasjonale senter) is a vocational school offering courses in cross-cultural understanding and international work. The school is owned by the Strømme Foundation, the Norwegian Missionary Society, and the Norwegian Christian Student and School Association, which each have their own exchange program. The academic program is a mix of theory and practice in which all of the students spend six to seven months of student traineeship in another culture. The school has about 40 Norwegian students and 20 students from abroad. The Norwegian students have their traineeship abroad, and the students from abroad have their traineeship in Norway. Operation Day's Work
Operation Day's Work is a solidarity program based on volunteering by high school students. It was implemented in Norway to honor the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld. During Operation Day's Work (also called Solidarity Action Day), students get the chance to exercise a job of their choice instead of going to school for one day. They donate their salaries to youth-related projects from all over the world. Today there are Operation Day's Work organisations in several countries. Multiple Operation Day's Work organisations have engaged in the SAME network (SAME). Within this network, all the committees have agreed to the terms of the network's basic common principles and quality guidelines. Muhammad Yunus
Muhammad Yunus (born 28 June 1940) is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. These loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below". Oddernes Church
Oddernes Church ( no, Oddernes kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Kristiansand Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the district of Lund in the borough of Lund in the city of Kristiansand. It is one of the churches for the Oddernes parish which is part of the Kristiansand domprosti (arch- deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, stone church was built in a long church design around the year 1040 using plans drawn up by unknown architect. This makes it the oldest building in the city of Kristiansand. The church seats about 395 people. The chancel has rubble walls and a semi-circular apse, testifying to the church's medieval origins. The newer additions such as the tower are made out of wood. Global South
The concept of Global North and Global South (or North–South divide in a global context) is used to describe a grouping of countries along socio-economic and political characteristics. The Global South is a term often used to identify regions within Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. It is one of a family of terms, including "Third World" and "Periphery", that denote regions outside Europe and North America. Most, though not all, of these countries are low-income and often politically or culturally marginalized on one side of the divide, while on the other side are the countries of the Global North (often equated with developed countries). Olav Kristian Strømme
Olav Kristian Strømme (November 22, 1907 – August 19, 1976) was a Norwegian Lutheran priest. He also established himself as a local historian and genealogical researcher, but he is best known for his fundraising activity for many aid projects. Through announcements in newspapers, he encouraged people to donate money to projects that had been started by Norwegian missionaries, and the sums that he collected through the ads gave him the reputation of an entire aid organization in one individual. Biography Strømme received his degree in theology in 1932 and served as a vicar in several locations until he became a deacon at Kristiansand Cathedral in 1942. Here he remained, while his position changed over the years to perpetual curate and then resident curate. His duties included service as a prison priest and a hospital priest.
