Strzelecki Creek
The Strzelecki Creek, part of the Lake Eyre basin, is an ephemeral watercourse located in the Australian state of South Australia. Course and features The Strzelecki is a distributary of Cooper Creek and branches off near the town of Innamincka and flows in a southerly direction thought the Strzelecki Desert for about towards Lake Blanche. While being feed by the Cooper Creek, it does have its own catchment and can flow independently after ‘heavy localised storms.’ Flows on ‘exceptional’ occasions can reach Lakes Blanche, Callabonna, Frome and Gregory. Its watercourse is lined by trees, bordered by “large parallel sand ridges” and includes “a series of waterholes.” Parts of the creek system are within the protected area known as the Strzelecki Regional Reserve. Paweł Strzelecki
Sir Paweł Edmund Strzelecki (;By Australian English speakers: pɔːl strʌzlɛki (paul struhzLECKi). 20 July 17976 October 1873), also known as Paul Edmund de Strzelecki and Sir Paul Strzelecki, was a Polish explorer, geologist, humanitarian, environmentalist, nobleman, scientist, businessman and philanthropist who in 1845 also became a British subject. He is noted for his contributions to the exploration of Australia, particularly the Snowy Mountains and Tasmania, and for climbing and naming the highest – – mountain on the continent, Mount Kosciuszko. Early years Strzelecki was born in 1797, in Głuszyna (Glausche) near Poznań (Posen), in the Polish territory occupied by the Kingdom of Prussia. Distributary
A distributary, or a distributary channel, is a stream that branches off and flows away from a main stream channel. Distributaries are a common feature of river deltas. The phenomenon is known as river bifurcation. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary, which flows ''towards'' and joins another stream. Augustus Charles Gregory
Sir Augustus Charles Gregory (1 August 1819 – 25 June 1905) was an English-born Australian explorer and surveyor. Between 1846 and 1858 he undertook four major expeditions. He was the first Surveyor-General of Queensland. He was appointed a lifetime Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Charles Sturt
Charles Napier Sturt (28 April 1795 – 16 June 1869) was a British officer and explorer of Australia, and part of the European exploration of Australia. He led several expeditions into the interior of the continent, starting from Sydney and later from Adelaide. His expeditions traced several of the westward-flowing rivers, establishing that they all merged into the Murray River, which flows into the Southern Ocean. He was searching to prove his own passionately held belief that an " inland sea" was located at the centre of the continent. He reached the rank of Captain, served in several appointed posts, and on the Legislative Council. Blanchewater Station
Blanchewater Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the far north of South Australia. Description It is situated approximately north east of Lyndhurst and south west of Innamincka. The MacDonnell River traverses the property and flows into Lake Blanche. A large waterhole on Mount Hopeless Creek is also situated to the east and once operated as an outstation. The Strzelecki Creek also flows through the property all the way to the northern Flinders Ranges are found to the south of the station. The first European to visit to the area was Benjamin Babbage in 1856 who named the area after Governor McDonnell's wife. George Goyder then surveyed the area in 1857 and John Baker then took up a lease and stocked the property with cattle in 1858. Tinga Tingana
Tinga Tingana Station was a pastoral lease that once operated as a sheep station in outback South Australia. The lease was originally taken up by William Christopher Burkitt in 1874. The lease straddled the sandy country on either side of the Strzelecki Creek and had one semi-permanent waterhole along with five wells to water stock. Burkitt abandoned the station in 1889 after the lease expired. A fortnightly mail coach ran through the property in 1878 on the Strzelecki Track, with a horse changing station located on the property., the track to Tinga Tingana from the track was still utilised in the 1960s An Aboriginal stockman named Logic killed his overseer, Cornelius Mulhall, at the property in 1878. Logic then disappeared into the Strzelecki Desert evading capture for two years until he returned and was arrested. Strzelecki Desert Lakes Important Bird Area
The Strzelecki Desert Lakes Important Bird Area is an Important Bird Area (IBA) in the Australian state of South Australia which consists of a series of ephemeral waterbodies in the arid Strzelecki Desert in the state's Far North region. It is considered to be important for waterbirds when its constituent lakes hold water in the aftermath of floods. Description The Important Bird Area consists of a chain of lakes, of varying levels of salinity, on the lower Cooper and Strzelecki Creeks in north-eastern South Australia. The site is defined by the maximum extent of the Cooper Creek floodplain from Lakes Hope and Appadare to Lakes Killalpaninna, Kooperamanna and Killamperpunna, as well as Lakes Gregory, Blanche and Callabonna. Lake Gregory (South Australia)
Lake Gregory is a salt lake located in the Far North region of South Australia. The lake lies to the west of Lake Blanche; to the east the Birdsville Track runs in between it and Lake Eyre. Hydrology Lake Gregory is fed by local rainfall and by overflows from Lake Blanche to its east. It was filled in 1974, 1984 and 1990. Lake Frome
Lake Frome / Munda is a large endorheic lake in the Australian state of South Australia to the east of the Northern Flinders Ranges. It is a large, shallow, unvegetated salt pan, long and wide, lying mostly below sea level and having a total surface area of . It only rarely fills with brackish water flowing down usually dry creeks in the Northern Flinders Ranges from the west, or exceptional flows down the Strzelecki Creek from the north. The Adnyamathanha name for the lake is ''Munda''. Europeans named the lake ''Frome'' after Edward Charles Frome, after he mapped the area in 1843. Lake Callabonna
Lake Callabonna is a dry salt lake with little to no vegetation located in the Far North (South Australia), Far North region of South Australia. The lake is situated approximately southwest of Cameron Corner Survey Marker, Cameron Corner, the junction of South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. It is also known as Lake Mulligan. The lake is an important site for late Pleistocene fossils. It is within the extent of the Strzelecki Desert Lakes Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance for waterbirds when holding water in the aftermath of floods. Strzelecki Desert
The Strzelecki Desert is located in the Far North Region of South Australia, South West Queensland and western New South Wales. It is positioned in the northeast of the Lake Eyre Basin, and north of the Flinders Ranges. Two other deserts occupy the Lake Eyre Basin—the Tirari Desert and the Simpson Desert. Name It was named after the Polish explorer Paweł Edmund Strzelecki by Charles Sturt. Sturt was the first non-indigenous explorer in the area in late 1845, followed by the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition in 1861. Geography The desert covers 80,250 km2 making it the seventh largest desert in Australia.
