Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act
The ''Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act'' is a statute in Ontario that grants extra powers to the Mayor of Toronto and the Mayor of Ottawa within their mayor–council governments. Powers granted The Act grants the Mayors of Toronto and Ottawa direct control over: * Drafting of the city budgets * The appointments and dismissals of their city managers and department leaders (except police chiefs, fire chiefs, or auditors general) * Vetoes over laws that may conflict with provincial priorities, which may be overturned if a supermajority of two-thirds of city councillors voted to do so * The creation and reorganisation of municipal administrative departments Reactions John Tory, the mayor of Toronto at the time, expressed appreciation for the powers granted to him under the act. Outgoing Ottawa mayor Jim Watson deemed the powers unnecessary, also opining that "if they have to gather up two-thirds of their members to overturn a mayor's decision that's not really democratic at all." ...

The ''Municipal Act, 2001'' (the Act) is the main statute governing the creation, administration and government of municipalities in the Canadian province of Ontario, other than the City of Toronto. After being passed in 2001, it came into force on 1 January 2003, replacing the previous ''Municipal Act, 1990''. This act and others before as Municipal (Corporation) Act are linked back to Baldwin Act, 1849, which replaced the ineffective District Council Act by establishment of responsible government. James Alexander Watson (born July 30, 1961) is a Canadian politician who served as the 59th mayor of Ottawa from 2010 to 2022. Previously, he served as an Ottawa city councillor from 1991 to 1997, and as mayor from 1997 to 2000. Watson subsequently represented the riding of Ottawa West—Nepean in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2010. Robert Bratina (born 1944) is a Canadian politician and former broadcaster who was the 56th mayor of Hamilton from 2010 to 2014. Previously, he sat on the Hamilton City Council from 2004 until 2010.
