Strigiphilus
''Strigiphilus'' is a genus of chewing louse in the suborder Ischnocera. It was circumscribed in 1910 by Eric Mjöberg. Taxonomic history Mjöberg initially circumscribed ''Strigiphilus'' as a subgenus of the genus he referred to as ''Docophorus'' (now known as '' Philopterus''). In a 1966 paper, Theresa Clay recognized 29 species and grouped them into the following nine species groups: * '' Strigiphilus rostratus'' group * '' Strigiphilus heterocerus'' group * '' Strigiphilus cursor'' group * '' Strigiphilus crenulatus'' group * '' Strigiphilus macrogenitalis'' group * '' Strigiphilus strigis'' group * '' Strigiphilus siamensis'' group * '' Strigiphilus ketupae'' group * '' Strigiphilus cursitans'' group The largest group is the ''S. curstans'' group. Hosts ''Strigiphilus'' is the only genus of Ischnocera to exclusively parasitize owls. Species , there are approximately fifty species of ''Strigiphilus''. Strigiphilus Garylarsoni
''Strigiphilus garylarsoni'' is a species of chewing louse found only on owls. The species has no common name. The species was first described by biologist Dale H. Clayton in 1990. Host Its type host is the Northern white-faced owl (''Ptilopsis leucotis''). Distribution The type location is Ndola, Zambia. Etymology It was named after Gary Larson, creator of the syndicated cartoon ''The Far Side.'' In a letter to Larson, Clayton praised the cartoonist for "the enormous contribution that my colleagues and I feel you have made to biology through your cartoons." In his 1989 book ''The Prehistory of the Far Side'', Larson stated, "I considered this an extreme honor. Besides, I knew no one was going to write and ask to name a new species of swan after me. You have to grab these opportunities when they come along." Clayton wrote he honored Larson "in appreciation of the unique light he has shed on the workings of nature." Ischnocera
The Ischnocera is a large superfamily of lice. They are mostly parasitic on birds, but including a large family (the Trichodectidae) parasitic on mammals. The genus '' Trichophilopterus'' is also found on mammals (lemurs), but probably belongs to the "avian Ischnocera" and represents a host switch from birds to mammals. It is a chewing louse, which feeds on the feathers and skin debris of birds. Many of the avian Ischnocera have evolved an elongated body shape. This allows them to conceal themselves between the feather shafts and avoid being dislodged during preening or flight. The taxonomy of the group is in need of revision, as several phylogenetic studies have found the group to be paraphyletic, specifically in regards to the two major families Philopteridae and Trichodectidae. In order to resolve this, in 2020 de Moya ''et al.'' proposed retaining the majority of the species (including Philopteridae) within Ischnocera, and then moving Trichodectidae to its own grouping calle ...

Parasitize
Parasitism is a close relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or inside another organism, the host, causing it some harm, and is adapted structurally to this way of life. The entomologist E. O. Wilson has characterised parasites as "predators that eat prey in units of less than one". Parasites include single-celled protozoans such as the agents of malaria, sleeping sickness, and amoebic dysentery; animals such as hookworms, lice, mosquitoes, and vampire bats; fungi such as honey fungus and the agents of ringworm; and plants such as mistletoe, dodder, and the broomrapes. There are six major parasitic strategies of exploitation of animal hosts, namely parasitic castration, directly transmitted parasitism (by contact), trophicallytransmitted parasitism (by being eaten), vector-transmitted parasitism, parasitoidism, and micropredation. One major axis of classification concerns invasiveness: an endoparasite lives inside the host's body; an ect ...
