Strawberry Island (Lake Simcoe)
Strawberry Island is a 25-acre lake island in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. It used to be owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Congregation of St. Basil as a place of retreat. Pope John Paul II spent four days on the island in 2002. It is about a two hour drive north of Toronto. In 2007, the island was purchased by Trans America Group. A lake island is any landmass within a lake. It is a type of inland island. Lake islands may form a lake archipelago. Formation Lake islands may form in numerous ways. They may occur through a build-up of sedimentation as shoals, and become true islands through changes in the level of the lake. Lake Simcoe
Lake Simcoe is a lake in southern Ontario, Canada, the fourth-largest lake wholly in the province, after Lake Nipigon, Lac Seul, and Lake Nipissing. At the time of the first European contact in the 17th century the lake was called ''Ouentironk'' ("Beautiful Water") by the native Wendat/Ouendat (Huron) people. It was also known as ''Lake Taronto'' until it was renamed by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, in memory of his father, Captain John Simcoe of the Royal Navy. Pope John Paul II ( la, Ioannes Paulus II; it, Giovanni Paolo II; pl, Jan Paweł II; born Karol Józef Wojtyła ; 18 May 19202 April 2005) was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 1978 until his death in April 2005, and was later canonised as Pope Saint John Paul II. Ramara is a lower-tier township (Canada), township municipality in Simcoe County, Ontario, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Ramara was formed in 1994 through the amalgamation of the townships of Rama Township, Ontario, Rama and Mara.
