Clara Harrison Stranahan
Clara Harrison Stranahan (, Harrison; pen name, C. H. Stranahan; April 9, 1831 – January 22, 1905) was an American author and the founder of Barnard College. Long identified with the higher education of women in the United States, she was at one time called "the best educated woman in the United States." She taught in Troy, Ohio and in Brooklyn, New York, and donated to University of Michigan as a memorial of her father, Seth Harrison. Stranahan was a founder and a trustee of Barnard College. She was a frequent contributor to magazines and other periodicals, and was the author of a work upon French painting. Stranahan was vice-president of the Emma Willard Association, composed of alumnae of the Troy Female Seminary, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Farrand Stewart Stranahan
Farrand Stewart Stranahan (February 2, 1842 – July 13, 1904) was an American Civil War veteran, a railroad executive, a banker, and a U.S. politician of the Republican Party. Early life F. Stewart Stranahan was born in Manhattan, New York City, the son of Caroline (née Curtis) and Farrand Stewart Stranahan (1812–1845). New York State Senator Farrand Stranahan (1778–1826) was his grandfather, and General Charles Stewart was his great-grandfather. In 1859 Stranahan moved to Vermont. On August 6, 1862, he married Miranda Aldis Brainerd, daughter of Senator Lawrence Brainerd and Fidelia Gadcomb. Frank Stranahan
Frank Richard Stranahan (August 5, 1922 – June 23, 2013) was an American sportsman. He had significant success in both amateur and professional golf. He was ranked number one in his weight class in powerlifting, from 1945 to 1954, and he became known on the golf course and off as the "Toledo strongman" long before the modern game of golf and fitness. After he retired from tournament golf in the early 1960s, he became a prolific long-distance runner, competing in 102 marathons. Early life and family Stranahan was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1922. Nevada Stranahan
Nevada N. Stranahan (February 27, 1861 – July 6, 1928) was a Collector of the Port of New York who was born in Oswego County, New York. Career He studied law at Columbia Law School and was admitted to the bar. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Oswego Co., 1st D.) in 1890, 1891 and 1892; and was District Attorney of Oswego County. He was a member of the New York State Senate representing the 37th District from 1896 to 1902, sitting in the 119th, 120th, 121st, 122nd, 123rd, 124th and 125th New York State Legislatures. In March 1902, he was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as Collector of the Port of New York, and resigned his seat in the Senate. Illness forced him to resign the collectorship in 1907. Death Stranahan died in Winwick, Northamptonshire, England on July 6, 1928. His wife Elsie predeceased him in 1922. Stranahan High School
Stranahan High School, is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida was officially opened in 1953 as an elementary school. The school is a part of the Broward County Public Schools district. Originally for white students only, In 1963 Chester Seabury became the first African-American to graduate from a white high school in Florida when he graduated from Stranahan. The school was built on land donated by Ivy Julia Cromartie Stranahan, and was named after her late husband Frank Stranahan. The school progressively added the junior high school grades a year at a time due to rapid population growth in the area. The school opened as a high school in 1957. Stranahan House
Stranahan House is the home of Fort Lauderdale pioneers Frank and Ivy Stranahan. Built in 1901 as a trading post and converted into a residence for the Stranahans in 1906, the house is the oldest surviving structure in Broward County. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and today operates as a historic house museum. The Stranahan Theater & Great Hall, commonly known as the Stranahan Theater is a 2,424-seat concert hall located in Toledo, Ohio. The facility was constructed in 1969 and until the mid-1990s was called Masonic Auditorium because attached to the west side of the theater is a structure owned and occupied by several Masonic organizations. Part of the construction and maintenance costs have been funded by the Stranahan Foundation. Around the time of the name change, theater management began seeking more broad-based community funding.
