Straight Edge
Straight edge (sometimes abbreviated sXe or signified by XXX or X) is a subculture of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs, in reaction to the excesses of punk subculture. For some, this extends to refraining from engaging in promiscuous sex, to following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and to not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term ''straight edge'' was adopted from the 1981 song " Straight Edge" by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat. The straight edge subculture emerged amid the early-1980s hardcore punk scene. Since then, a wide variety of beliefs and ideas have been associated with the movement, including vegetarianism and animal rights. While the commonly expressed aspects of the straight edge subculture have been abstinence from alcohol, nicotine, and illegal drugs, there have been considerable variations. New Times Broward-Palm Beach
''New Times Broward-Palm Beach'' is a news website that until 2016 also published a weekly print newspaper; it is part of the Voice Media Group chain. The original paper split off from the ''Miami New Times'' in 1997, under the auspices of then editor-in-chief Tom Walsh. Walsh was succeeded by Chuck Strouse, who was replaced in 2005 with Tony Ortega. In March 2007, Ortega was appointed as editor-in-chief of the company's flagship paper, ''The Village Voice''. In April 2007, Robert Meyerowitz was named editor-in-chief, though he departed the following May to take an endowed chair at University of Alaska. In 2009, Eric Barton was hired as editor; in June 2012, he left the company when editorship of the paper was combined with that of ''Miami New Times'', where Strouse became editor. DYS (band)
DYS is an American straight edge hardcore punk band from Boston, Massachusetts, who were part of the " Boston Crew" in the 1980s, along with contemporaries such as SSD and Negative FX. The group later expanded their sound, becoming one of the first hardcore bands to veer into heavy metal. History Formation DYS was founded in the 1980s by singer Dave Smalley and bassist Jonathan Anastas. At the time, Smalley was a freshman at Boston College, while Anastas - at age 15 - had previously founded the short-lived band Decadence, whose song "Slam" was featured on the '' This Is Boston, Not LA'' compilation, and later adopted for a long-running MTV advertising campaign titled "Santa, the Man, the Myth, the Slam Dancer." Down To Nothing
Down to Nothing (or DTN) was a straight edge hardcore punk band from Richmond, Virginia. Since their inception in 2000, the band has toured all over the world. Their most recent studio recording is the 2013 LP ''Life on the James'' on Revelation Records, preceded by CD/vinyl EP titled ''All My Sons'' released in 2010 on Reaper Records (US) and Dead Souls Records (AUS). Down to Nothing's first two albums, '' Save It for the Birds'' and '' Splitting Headache'', are currently out of print but were re-released in February 2008 on one CD/LP titled '' Unbreakable''. The Dillinger Escape Plan (band)
The Dillinger Escape Plan was an American metalcore band. The band was formed in 1997 in Morris Plains, New Jersey by guitarist Ben Weinman, bassist Adam Doll, vocalist Dimitri Minakakis, and drummer Chris Pennie. The band's use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms and unconventional drum patterns became a staple of their sound, although later albums incorporated more melody, and influences from a range of genres. The band's lineup shifted numerous times throughout its existence; by the time the group dissolved, Weinman was the only remaining founding member. The last surviving lineup also included longtime members Liam Wilson on bass, Greg Puciato as lead vocalist, and Billy Rymer on the drum kit, alongside then-newcomer Kevin Antreassian as rhythm guitarist. Deadlock (band)
Deadlock is a German heavy metal band from Schwarzenfeld, Bavaria. In 2010 they supported Lacuna Coil on tour. The band consists of only founding member Sebastian Reichl (guitar) alongside John Gahlert (vocals), Margie Gerlitz (vocals), Ferdinand Rewicki (guitar), Christian Simmerl (bass) and Werner Riedl (drums). Clear (hardcore Band)
Clear (stylized as xClearx) was a straight edge metalcore group from Utah in the mid-late 1990s, known for its sound similar to Culture and Morning Again. The band broke up in 2000. Mick Morris went on to Eighteen Visions, and other members Jason Knott, Levi Lebo, and Josh Asher to The Kill. Levi and Mick previously also played in Decontaminate. Sean and Tyler went on to form Hammergun. xclearx played one reunion show on February 16, 2007. In 2013 Mick Morris died prompting Clear to do a memorial show for his son. Clear played a benefit show a couple years later. Currently 2017 Jason Knott is a singer/guitarist for Motherkilljoy, Levi Lebo plays guitar for Exes, Tyler Smith drums for Eagle Twin. ''Phoenix New Times'' is a free digital and print media company based in Phoenix, Arizona. ''New Times'' publishes daily online coverage of local news, restaurants, music and arts, as well as longform narrative journalism. A weekly print issue circulates every Thursday. Chokehold (band)
Chokehold is a Canadian vegan straight edge hardcore punk band from Hamilton, Ontario. They were active from 1990 to 1996, and came together again for a reunion tour in 2015, and five dates in Japan in September 2016. They released their third album in 2019. History Chokehold was formed in 1990 in Hamilton. Their first release ''More Than Ever'' was in 1991. This was followed in 1992 by a split EP with Crisis of Faith and the ''Life Goes On'' EP. Their rise in popularity paralleled that of other vegan straight edge bands such as Earth Crisis, and hardline bands like Vegan Reich and Raid. In 1993 Chokehold released the ''Prison of Hope'' LP through American label Conquer the World Records and sounded their own record label Structure Records to release music by Florida band Bloodlet. Champion (band)
Champion was an American straight edge hardcore punk band formed by vocalist Jim Hesketh and guitarist Chris Williams in the spring of 1999 in Seattle, Washington. History Jim and Chris formed Champion and after a few months of shows, the band released its first demo on cassette and went on a West Coast tour of the United States. In the early days the band was plagued with constant line-up changes, but in 2000 the majority of the core lineup came together to release the ''Come Out Swinging'' EP on Platinum Recordings (Germany). After playing with American Nightmare Timbomb suggested Chris Wrenn of Bridge Nine Records check out the band. Chain of Strength is a straight edge hardcore punk band from Southern California that had its heyday in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Biography The first Chain of Strength release was a 7" EP entitled ''True Till Death'', released through Revelation Records. Casey Jones (band)
Casey Jones was a straight edge hardcore punk band from Jacksonville, Florida. The band consisted of members from Evergreen Terrace and Anchors Away and was signed to Eulogy Records. They released three albums and a split 7-inch History Casey Jones formed in early 2003 as a side project of Evergreen Terrace. The band's name is taken from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character Casey Jones. The band was originally started by Josh James of Evergreen Terrace, his brother Caleb, and Josh Smith (former member of Evergreen Terrace). Shortly after forming, the band wrote several songs and recorded a five-song demo entitled ''Are Some Crucial Dudes''.
