Strachur; ( gd, Srath Chura) and Strathlachlan; ( gd, Srath Lachlainn) are united parishes located on the Cowal peninsula, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Strachur is a small village on the eastern coast of Loch Fyne. Geography Cowal is the large peninsula situated between Loch Long to the east and Loch Fyne to the west and bordered to the north by the arterial road A83. Strachur is located 7 miles south of the A83, linking Loch Lomond and A82 to Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Campbeltown, and is 18 miles north of Dunoon, the main town of the Cowal peninsula. The area around Strachur borders the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The parish is bounded along its north-west side by Loch Fyne - Strachur forming its north-western district, and Strathlachlan its south-western one; and it is bounded on other sides by the parishes of Lochgoilhead, Kilmun, Dunoon, and Kilmodan. General John Campbell, 17th Chief of MacArthur Campbells of Strachur (1727 – 28 August 1806) was a Scottish soldier and nobleman, who commanded the British forces at the Siege of Pensacola, and succeeded Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester as Commander-in-Chief in North America in 1783 following the end of the American War of Independence. Early military career He inherited the title (17th of Strachur) upon the death of his father Admiral John Campbell (16th of Strachur) and was a direct descendant of the Strachur branch of Clan Campbell. John Campbell was appointed lieutenant in John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun's Highlanders in June 1745. The young Campbell showed his military prowess during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and served in the British Army throughout the rising of 1745–1746 including the Battle of Culloden, in which he was wounded. George Campbell, 8th Duke Of Argyll
George John Douglas Campbell, 8th and 1st Duke of Argyll (30 April 1823 – 24 April 1900; styled Marquess of Lorne until 1847), was a Scottish polymath and Liberal statesman. He made a significant geological discovery in the 1850s when his tenant found fossilized leaves embedded among basalt lava on the Island of Mull. He also helped to popularize ornithology and was one of the first to give a detailed account of the principles of bird flight in the hopes of advancing artificial aerial navigation (i.e. flying machines). His literary output was extensive writing on topics varying from science and theology to economy and politics. Veronica, Lady Maclean ( Fraser, formerly Phipps; 2 December 1920 – 7 January 2005) was a Scottish food writer and hotelier. Her family owned Creggan's Inn on the shores of Loch Fyne in Argyll. Her first book pioneered recipes that she had collected from family and friends which she described as family or country house cooking, as opposed to the classical French haute cuisine, which was the universal style in hotels and restaurants in the 1960s. Her first book, ''Lady Maclean's Cook Book'' (1966), was enlivened by such dishes as the Duchess of Devonshire's fish soup, Lady Diana Cooper's blackcurrant leaf ice, Lady Lovat's oxtail, Fitz's " plov from Samarkand" - and went through several printings. Major-General Sir Fitzroy Hew Royle Maclean, 1st Baronet, (11 March 1911 – 15 June 1996) was a Scottish soldier, writer and politician. The Campbells of Strachur, also known as the MacArthur Campbells of Strachur, may be the oldest branch of the Clan Campbell. The family traces its descent from Sir Arthur Campbell, who is said to have been a son of Duncan Dubh, who in turn may have been an elder brother of Gilleasbaig, who was in turn the father of the patrilineal-ancestor of the chiefs of Clan Campbell.
