Stour Music Festival
The Stour Music Festival is a festival of early music held in the Stour valley, Kent, England. It was founded by the countertenor Alfred Deller in 1962. The principal venue is a medieval church, All Saints' Church, Boughton Aluph. In the initial years it also included exhibition of paintings, organized by the painter John Ward. After the death of Alfred Deller in 1979, his son Mark Deller Mark Deller (born 1938) is an English conductor and countertenor, now retired. Early Music
Early music generally comprises Medieval music (500–1400) and Renaissance music (1400–1600), but can also include Baroque music (1600–1750). Originating in Europe, early music is a broad musical era for the beginning of Western classical music. Terminology Interpretations of historical scope of "early music" vary. The original Academy of Ancient Music formed in 1726 defined "Ancient" music as works written by composers who lived before the end of the 16th century. Johannes Brahms and his contemporaries would have understood Early music to range from the High Renaissance and Baroque, while some scholars consider that Early music should include the music of ancient Greece or Rome before 500 AD (a period that is generally covered by the term Ancient music). River Stour, Kent
The River Stour is a river in Kent, England that flows into the North Sea at Pegwell Bay. Above Plucks Gutter, where the Little Stour joins it, the river is normally known as the Great Stour. The upper section of the river, above its confluence with the East Stour, Kent, East Stour at Ashford, Kent, Ashford is sometimes known as the Upper Great Stour or West Stour. In the tidal lower reaches, the artificial Stonar Cut short cuts a large loop in the natural river. The Stour has Kent's second largest catchment area (the River Medway having the largest). The lower part of the river is tidal; its original mouth was on the Wantsum Channel, an important sea route in medieval times. The river has three major tributaries, and many minor ones. Alfred Deller
Alfred George Deller, CBE (31 May 1912 – 16 July 1979), was an English singer and one of the main figures in popularising the return of the countertenor voice in Renaissance and Baroque music during the 20th century. He is sometimes referred to as the "godfather of the countertenor". His style in singing lute song, with extensive use of rubato and extemporised ornamentation, was seen as radical and controversial in his day but is now considered the norm. Deller was an influential figure in the renaissance of early music: an early proponent of "original instrument performance" and one of the first to bring this form to the popular consciousness through his broadcasts on the BBC. All Saints' Church, Boughton Aluph
All Saints' Church is a 13th-century pilgrims' Grade I listed church in Boughton Aluph near Ashford, Kent. It is part of the Church of England. Built in the thirteenth century by a man named Adulphus to replace a Saxon church, it was enlarged in the 14th century by Sir Thomas Aldon, one of Edward III of England's courtiers. The building was restored in 1878. On 27 November 1957, the church was placed on the ''Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest'', as a Grade I building. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was extensively renovated, including the cleansing and restoration of the windows in 2009. The church continues to be an active centre for worship, and is part of the United Wye Benefice. Every June, the building is used to host the ''Stour Music Festival.'' Mark Deller
Mark Deller (born 1938) is an English conductor and countertenor, now retired. He is the son of the first modern countertenor, Alfred Deller. Life and career Mark Deller and his parents moved to Canterbury, Kent, just before his first birthday. Alfred was a lay clerk at Canterbury Cathedral in the 1940s, and his young son also joined the cathedral choir, although Alfred transferred to the choir of St Paul's Cathedral in London about the time that Mark became a chorister at Canterbury. Mark went on to win a scholarship at St John's College, Cambridge, which is famous for its choir After completing his education, Deller pursued a musical career.
