Storyville, New Orleans
Storyville was the red-light district of New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1897 to 1917. It was established by municipal ordinance under the New Orleans City Council, to regulate prostitution. Sidney Story, a city alderman, wrote guidelines and legislation to control prostitution within the city. The ordinance designated an area of the city in which prostitution, although still nominally illegal, was tolerated or regulated. The area was originally referred to as "The District", but its nickname, "Storyville", soon caught on, much to the chagrin of Alderman Story. It was bound by the streets of North Robertson, Iberville, Basin, and St. Louis Streets. It was located by a train station, making it a popular destination for travelers throughout the city, and became a centralized attraction in the heart of New Orleans. Storyville Coffee (sometimes Storyville Coffee Company or simply Storyville) is a coffee company operating in the Seattle metropolitan area, in the U.S. state of Washington. Description Storyville Coffee operates multiple coffee shops in the Seattle metropolitan area. '' The Seattle Times'' has described Storyville as a "roaster and mail-order coffee company". Bainbridge Island houses their Roasting Studio; the business also has shops in downtown Seattle with their flagship location being in the Corner Market building at Pike Place Market. In addition to coffee, the shops serve sandwiches and baked goods. History Storyville was established on Bainbridge Island in 2006. Storyville Records is an international record company and label based in Copenhagen, Denmark, specializing in jazz and blues music. Besides its original material, Storyville Records has reissued many vintage jazz recordings that previously appeared on labels such as Paramount Records, American Music Records, and Southland Records. Many Storyville records were pressed in Japan. History Storyville Records was founded in the 1950s by Karl Emil Knudsen, a Danish jazz record collector who was working for the Copenhagen telephone company. Named after Storyville, New Orleans, the red-light district, its focus has always been on jazz and blues. The label's first releases were 78 rpm reissues featuring Ma Rainey, Clarence Williams Blue Five, and James P. Johnson. ''Storyville'' is Robbie Robertson's second solo album. It is focused on the famous jazz homeland section of New Orleans and on that part of the South in general. He contributed one song ("Breakin' the Rules") to Wim Wenders' soundtrack to his 1991 film, '' Until the End of the World''. ''Storyville'' was a British jazz magazine that ran from 1965 to 2003 featuring jazz history, discography, and record trading. It was published six times a year from October 1965 to December 1986 (issues 1 to 128), then quarterly from March 1987 to June 1995 (issues 129 to 162), then four volumes were published until 2003. History ''Storyville'' was founded by Laurie Wright ''(né'' Lawrence D. Wright; 1929–2010). The publication has been acclaimed for containing a wealth of early historical material on jazz. And although ''Storyville'' was not officially a peer-reviewed journal — in part because, other than music librarians, few jazz scholars existed in academic research in 1965 — it was, nonetheless, peer-reviewed in reality by well-informed jazz enthusiasts, discographers, musicologists, and the like. Storyville (band)
Storyville was a blues-rock band formed in 1993 in Austin, Texas, USA. Drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon, former members of Arc Angels and the rhythm section for Stevie Ray Vaughan's band Double Trouble, formed the band with Craig Ross, David Lee Holt and David Grissom after a jam session at Antone's. After releasing an album on November Records in 1993, the band won a total of nine Austin Music awards; they became stalwarts on the local music scene and toured nationally. Malford Milligan replaced Ross in 1994. They subsequently signed to major label Atlantic Records, for whom they recorded two albums before breaking up. The single "Born Without You", from their 1998 release ''Dog Years'', reached #28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Storyville was a Boston jazz nightclub organized by Boston-native, jazz promoter and producer George Wein during the 1940s. WNAC at ''Hotel Buckminster'' In 1929, WNAC Radio moved to new studios inside the Hotel and remained for the next four decades. An FM station was added in the late 1930s. In June, 1948, WNAC-TV began broadcasting from the Hotel. Until 1968, WNAC operated an AM, FM and television station in the hotel basement.
