Storrs, Connecticut
Storrs is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Mansfield in eastern Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,344 at the 2010 census. It is dominated economically and demographically by the main campus of the University of Connecticut and the associated Connecticut Repertory Theatre. Storrs was named for Charles and Augustus Storrs, two brothers who founded the University of Connecticut (originally called the Storrs Agricultural College) by giving the land () and $6,000 in 1881. In the aftermath of September 2005's Hurricane Katrina, '' Slate'' named Storrs "America's Best Place to Avoid Death Due to Natural Disaster." Storrs is also home to the new University of Connecticut Huskies baseball's home stadium, Elliot Ballpark, which replaced J. O. Christian Field. A census-designated place (CDP) is a Place (United States Census Bureau), concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing city (United States), cities, town (United States), towns, and village (United States), villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. CDPs are populated areas that generally include one officially designated but currently unincorporated area, unincorporated community, for which the CDP is named, plus surrounding inhabited countryside of varying dimensions and, occasionally, other, smaller unincorporated communities as well.
