Storm At Sea
''Storm at Sea'' or ''Saints Mark, George and Nicholas Freeing Venice from Demons'' is a c. 1528 oil on canvas painting by Palma Vecchio, now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Giovanni Mariacher, 'Palma il Vecchio', in ''I pittori bergamaschi-Il Cinquecento, I, Bergamo'', Poligrafiche Bolis, 1975, p. 214-215. It was partly completed in 1535 by Paris Bordon after Palma's death. History It was commissioned for the sala dell'Albergo in the scuola Grande di San Marco, forming part of a cycle of paintings on the life of Saint Mark, Venice's patron saint, commissioned by the rectors of the congregation from various artists. It was initially commissioned from Giovanni Mansueti, but it was transferred to Palma after Mansueti's death in 1527 - Palma was a member of the scuola from 1513 to 1528. Giorgio Vasari misattributed it to Giorgione, but later attributed it to Palma, though he probably left it unfinished on his death, with Bordon painting the boat. References Ext ... Giorgione
Giorgione (, , ; born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco; 1477–78 or 1473–74 – 17 September 1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school during the High Renaissance, who died in his thirties. He is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him. The uncertainty surrounding the identity and meaning of his work has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European art. Together with his younger contemporary Titian, he founded the Venetian school of Italian Renaissance painting, characterised by its use of colour and mood. The school is traditionally contrasted with Florentine painting, which relied on a more linear disegno-led style. San Giorgio Maggiore ( vec, San Zorzi Mazor) is one of the islands of Venice, northern Italy, lying east of the Giudecca and south of the main island group. Giorgio Vasari (, also , ; 30 July 1511 – 27 June 1574) was an Italian Renaissance Master, who worked as a painter, architect, engineer, writer, and historian, who is best known for his work ''The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects'', considered the ideological foundation of all art-historical writing, and the basis for biographies of several Renaissance artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Palma Vecchio
Palma Vecchio (c. 1480 – 30 July 1528), born Jacopo Palma, also known as Jacopo Negretti, was a Venetian painter of the Italian High Renaissance. He is called Palma Vecchio in English and Palma il Vecchio in Italian ("Palma the Elder") to distinguish him from Palma il Giovane ("Palma the Younger"), his great-nephew, who was also a painter. Life Palma was born at Serina Alta near Bergamo, a dependency of the Republic of Venice, but his recorded career all took place in or near Venice. He is first recorded in Venice in 1510, but had probably already been there for some time. He was perhaps apprenticed to Andrea Previtali, who also came from Bergamo, and who returned there in 1511.
