Storm King Mountain (Colorado)
Storm King Mountain is a mountain in the White River National Forest of the Rocky Mountains, northwest of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, in northeastern Garfield County. It is on the north side of the Colorado River and Interstate 70 (I-70), between Glenwood Springs and New Castle.A ski lift at the Copper Mountain Ski Resort is named after the mountain. July 1994 fire It is the site of the July 1994 South Canyon Fire in which 14 firefighters died. After the fire eliminated valuable vegetation and ground cover, torrential rains caused a mudslide on the night of September 1, 1994, that buried 30 cars and seriously injured two people on Interstate 70. The National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 is the official name since 1973 of the vertical datum established for vertical control surveying in the United States, United States of America by the General Adjustment of 1929. Originally known as Sea Level Datum of 1929, NGVD 29 was determined and published by the National Geodetic Survey and used to measure the elevation of a point above and depression (geology), depression below mean sea level (MSL). NGVD29 was superseded by the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), based upon reference to a single benchmark (referenced to the new International Great Lakes Datum of 1985 local mean sea level height value), although many cities and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers "legacy" projects with established data continued to use the older datum. New Castle, Colorado
The Town of New Castle is a home rule municipality in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 4,518 at the 2010 census, up from 1,984 at the 2000 census. History When New Castle was incorporated in 1888, its economy was largely based on mining coal that was needed by the silver-mining industry to fire silver smelters. On February 18, 1896, a methane explosion in the Vulcan Mine killed 49 men and started a coal fire that was still burning as of 2020. The Vulcan reopened and suffered additional explosions on December 12, 1913 (killing 37) and November 4, 1918 (killing 3). There are at least 25 coal fires burning near the town. They are normally confined underground, but in 2002 the Coal Seam Fire destroyed thirty houses in New Castle.
