''Storm Approaching Wangi'' is a 1948 painting by Australian artist Sir William Dobell. The painting depicts a storm at Wangi Wangi, New South Wales. The Art Gallery of New South Wales awarded the work the Wynne Prize for landscape painting in 1948. Dobell was awarded the Archibald Prize that same year for his portrait of artist Margaret Olley. Dobell painted the work after retiring to Wangi Wangi following the controversy over his portrait ''Mr Joshua Smith'' which was the subject of a court challenge after it was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1943. Gallery director Mark Widdup described the painting as "one of the most important landscape works of the 20th century." Dobell sold the work to Frank and Thelma Clune in 1948. William Dobell
Sir William Dobell (24 September 189913 May 1970) was an Australian portrait and landscape artist of the 20th century. Dobell won the Archibald Prize, Australia's premier award for portrait artists on three occasions. The Dobell Prize is named in his honour. Career Dobell was born in Cooks Hill, a working-class neighbourhood of Newcastle, New South Wales in Australia to Robert Way Dobell and Margaret Emma (née Wrightson). His father was a builder and there were six children. Dobell's artistic talents were evident early. In 1916, he was apprenticed to Newcastle architect, Wallace L. Porter and in 1924 he moved to Sydney as a draftsman. In 1925, he enrolled in evening art classes at the Sydney Art School (which later became the Julian Ashton Art School), with Henry Gibbons as his teacher. Wangi Wangi, New South Wales
Wangi Wangi () is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, which forms a peninsula jutting eastwards into Lake Macquarie. Wangi Wangi is a well known holiday spot, that was frequented in the early days by families from the coalfields. It is known for its views, bush-walking, and fishing spots. History The Awabakal people are the first people of this area. Early travel to the peninsula was quite difficult, and it was only accessible by ferries. Among the ferries operating to allow travel to Wangi were the Wangi Wangi, the Azile and the first Wangi Queen . The Wangi Queen currently on Sydney Harbour started out as a double decker built in 1922 as the Ettalong for use at Ettalong, and subsequently renamed Profound, and renamed in 1975 as the second "Wangi Queen" for use Lake Macquarie, where it remained until 2012. Wynne Prize
The Wynne Prize is an Australian landscape painting or figure sculpture art prize. As one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, it was established in 1897 from the bequest of Richard Wynne. Now held concurrently with the Sir John Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is awarded annually for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists completed during the 12 months preceding the losingdate". The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". Margaret Olley
Margaret Hannah Olley (24 June 192326 July 2011) was an Australian painter. She was the subject of more than ninety solo exhibitions. Early life Margaret Olley was born in Lismore, New South Wales. She was the eldest of three children of Joseph Olley and Grace (née Temperley). The Olley family moved to Tully, Queensland, Tully in far north Queensland in 1925, with Margaret boarding at Cathedral School, Townsville, St Anne's in Townsville in 1929, before returning to New South Wales in 1931. The family temporarily moved to Brisbane in 1935 with Margaret staying to attend Somerville House in Brisbane during her high school years. ''Mr Joshua Smith'', also known as ''Portrait of an Artist (Joshua Smith)'', is a 1943 in art, 1943 painting by Australian artist William Dobell. The painting is a portrait of Joshua Smith (artist), Joshua Smith, an artist and friend of Dobell. The painting was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1943. The painting took a modernist approach to portraiture; a break with the realism favoured to that date by Archibald Prize entrants. The modernist painting attracted vehement criticism and equally passionate praise. Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition.
