Stony, Texas
Stony is a ghost town in Denton County, Texas, Denton County in the U.S. state, U.S. State of Texas. The former town site is between Old Stoney Road and Farm to Market Road 2622 (FM 2622) in the western portion of Denton County. Stony is one of the three ghost towns in Denton County, which also include Elizabethtown, Texas, Elizabethtown and Drop, Texas, Drop, and one of many List of ghost towns in Texas, ghost towns in Texas. History Stony was first settled in the late 1850s and was named for the stony, rocky area it resided in. The population started out at only around a couple people, but it never exceeded a population of over 50. Stony opened a post office in 1879, but it only lasted until 1918. The town had a rather small boom in the 1880s, and in 1884, the town opened a mill, a gin, four churches, two schools, and a population of around 130. Denton, Texas
Denton is a city in and the county seat of Denton County, Texas, United States. With a population of 139,869 as of 2020, it is the 27th-most populous city in Texas, the 197th-most populous city in the United States, and the 12th-most populous city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. A Texas land grant led to the formation of Denton County in 1846, and the city was incorporated in 1866. Both were named after pioneer and Texas militia captain John B. Denton. Decatur, Texas
Decatur is the county seat of Wise County, Texas, United States. Its population was 6,538 in 2020. History Wise County was established in 1856, and Taylorsville (in honor of Zachary Taylor) was made the county seat. Absalom Bishop, an early settler and member of the Texas Legislature, opposed naming the town after a Whig Party member, and in 1858, arranged to have the name changed to Decatur, in honor of naval hero Stephen Decatur. In 1857, a post office was opened, and the first school was established in 1857. In the early 1860s, a courthouse was erected. Civil War Early settlers to northern Texas came from a variety of eastern states, and only about half came from the "Deep South". Ponder is a town in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,442 in 2020. History The community has the name of the local Ponder family. Local legend holds that Bonnie and Clyde either robbed the Ponder State Bank or attempted to rob it, only to discover it had gone broke the week before. Wise County, Texas
Wise County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 68,632. Its county seat is Decatur. Wise County is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth– Arlington metropolitan statistical area. Its Wise Eyes crime-watch program, eventually adopted by mostly rural counties in several states, was started in 1993 by then-Sheriff Phil Ryan. History On November 10, 1837, the Battle of the Knobs was fought in what is now Wise County between about 150 Native American warriors and 18 Republic of Texas soldiers under Lieutenant A. B. Justin, Texas
Justin is a city in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,409 in 2020. It is also an outer ring suburb of Fort Worth. History In 1848, approximately 70 followers of the French utopian socialist Étienne Cabet arrived in what is now Justin to found an Icarian community. The attempt failed. Contrary to popular belief, the town is not named after or related to the Justin Boot Company. In January 1887 the community petitioned postal authorities for a post office to be named Justin, in honor of Justin Sherman, a chief engineer with the Santa Fe Railroad.
