Stoneygate Conservation Area Society
Stoneygate is part of the City of Leicester, England. Situated on the south-east side of the city some two miles from the centre, Stoneygate is a mainly residential suburb characterised by its large Victorian houses. It straddles the London Road which connects Leicester with the town of Market Harborough and was formerly the main route for horse-drawn carriages between Leicester and London. It gives its name to Stoneygate ward, which also includes parts of Evington Valley and Highfields, whilst the south-eastern parts of Stoneygate are counted in the Knighton ward of Leicester City Council. History The name 'Stoneygate' originates in Old English as "stone road", and Ordnance Survey maps show the former route of the Roman Gartree Road leading south-east from Leicester towards Little Stretton, Medbourne, Corby and eventually, Colchester. Fielding Johnson Building
The Fielding Johnson Building is the main administrative building for the University of Leicester, Leicester, England. It is a Grade II listed building. History The building, which was designed by William Parsons with assistance from George Wallett in the late Georgian provincial style using an early Corridor Plan layout, opened as the Leicestershire and Rutland County Asylum in May 1837. There were 104 original inmates when the asylum first opened. Both wings were extended behind the main block in 1842. After the last inmates transferred to the new Carlton Hayes Hospital, the Leicester and Rutland Asylum closed in September 1908. During the First World War, the building was requisitioned by the War Office to create the 5th Northern General Hospital, a facility for the Royal Army Medical Corps to treat military casualties. Highfields, Leicester
Highfields is an inner city area of Leicester, England. It is one of the highest areas in the city, on high ground southeast of the city centre. To the west the area is bounded by the Midland Main Line, to the south by London Road ( A6), and to the east by East Park Road. To the north is Spinney Hills, though there is no clear boundary between the two areas, and Spinney Hills (which extends northwards to Humberstone Road) is often considered to be part of Highfields. The neighbourhood is within walking distance of the city centre of Leicester and offers many amenities for religious, social, cultural and commercial activities. Oadby is a town in the borough of Oadby and Wigston in the county of Leicestershire, England. Oadby is a district centre south east of Leicester city centre on the A6 trunk road. Leicester Racecourse is situated on the border between Oadby and Stoneygate. The University of Leicester Botanical Garden is in Oadby. The Clarendon Park Congregational Church is a Congregational church in Leicester, Leicestershire, UK. It is located on London Road in the Stoneygate district near Clarendon Park.
