Stirling Terrace, Albany
Stirling Terrace, Albany is a street in the centre of Albany, Western Australia adjoining York Street. As a historic street and part of a historic precinct it has a number of listed heritage buildings that look out over the Albany Harbour, including Argyle House. Stirling Terrace has appeared on maps of the town since 1834 and is named after James Stirling, the first Governor of Western Australia. The 1835 Hillman survey plan established the road as the prime location in the town, with a variety of social, commercial, leisure, institutional and service functions. The town jetty and railway station both had frontage along Stirling Terrace making it a transport hub of the town. The Empire theatre was also built along Stirling Terrace. During the 1870s and 1880s much of the frontage along Stirling Terrace to the east of York Street was filled. The Royal George Hotel is a heritage listed building that operates as a hotel in Albany, Western Australia, Albany in the Great Southern (Western Australia), Great Southern region of Western Australia. It is located along Stirling Terrace, Albany, Stirling Terrace, overlooking Princess Royal Harbour adjacent to the White Star Hotel. The three storey building is an example of Victorian architecture, Victorian Free Classical architecture and is part of a group of commercial buildings with an asymmetrical façade and inter-columnisation. The building has a painted rendered brick facade on the second and third storeys with painted brick below. The roof is concealed by a parapet wall with gables and classical decorative motifs. Albany Post Office
Albany Post Office is a heritage site of the former post office in Albany, Western Australia. The site was also a Customs office, a base station of the overland telegraph, and is noted for its architectural and historical significance. It was listed by the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The building is situated on Stirling Terrace, opposite Spencer Street, on a multilevel site that overlooks Princess Royal Harbour. The main building was constructed in two stages, the first in local materials such as brick, granite and sheoak shingles, the second also included materials imported from New South Wales. The original building was completed in 1869, after requests from the Government Resident to the administration in Perth, Western Australia. Large scale site works included excavations, by convict labour, and a large granite retaining wall up to 5 feet thick. London Hotel, Albany
The London Hotel is a hotel located on Stirling Terrace overlooking Princess Royal Harbour in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The current building was built in 1909 for the sum of £7,000. The building was designed by architect J. Herbert Eales. The proprietor was Harry C. Sims, with work completed by contractor A. Thompson. It was built on the site of the Chusan Hotel which had stood on the site since 1849 and was rebuilt in 1871. When it was constructed the two storey brick built hotel was plastered and surrounded by large spacious balconies. The entrance hall was reminiscent of an English mansion; a by drawing room opened onto the balcony, as did the dining room of similar proportions. The public bars were located on the ground floor. Sims remained the proprietor of the hotel until 1918. In 1930 the hotel was put up for auction and was sold to E. S. Cowan, a local resident, for £7500. Albany Courthouse
The Albany Courthouse is found in the Albany Courthouse Complex, also known as the Albany Justice Complex, which is a series of buildings situated on Stirling Terrace and Collie Streets in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Heritage buildings found on the site include the Albany Courthouse, Gaolkeepers House and Residence 1845. The courthouse was designed by George Temple-Poole and built by Charles Layton. It was decided to build the courthouse on the site of the old state school, which had to be demolished. Building commenced in 1896 with the laying of the foundation stone on 29 December 1896 by Frederick Piesse. The building was to take nine months to complete but was delayed in 1897 when the supply of bricks was exhausted.
