Ezra Stiles College
Ezra Stiles College is one of the fourteen residential colleges at Yale University, built in 1961 and designed by Eero Saarinen. It is often simply called "Stiles," despite an early-1990s crusade by then-master Traugott Lawler to preserve the use of the full name in everyday speech. The College is named after Ezra Stiles, the seventh President of Yale. Architecturally, it is known for its lack of right angles between walls in the living areas. It sits next to Morse College. Origin In his report on the 1955-56 academic year, Yale President A. Whitney Griswold announced his intention to add at least one residential college to Yale's two-decade-old system. Jason Stiles (born June 28, 1973) is a former American football quarterback who played two seasons with the Portland Forest Dragons of the Arena Football League and one season overseas in the German Football League 2. He played college football at Western Washington University. Stiles first enrolled at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California before transferring to Decatur High School in Federal Way, Washington. Stiles was also a member of the Wolfsburg Blue Wings. Early years Stiles first played high school football for the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Eagles. He was the state's leading passer in 1990. He recorded 22 touchdowns on 3,200 passing yards in two years for the Eagles. Stiles earned all-league honors twice and was team captain for two years. Jackie Marie Stiles (born December 21, 1978) is an American college basketball coach who was formerly an assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team and at Missouri State University. Stiles set several scoring records while playing shooting guard in college and was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. Sir Harold Jalland Stiles (21 March 1863 – 19 April 1946) was an English surgeon who was known for his research into cancer and tuberculosis and for treatment of nerve injuries. Early years Harold Stiles was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1863 the son of Henry Tournay Stiles MD and his wife, Elizabeth Ellen Jalland. He came from a family of doctors. He studied Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB ChB in 1885. He earned the Ettles scholarship for the most distinguished graduate of the year. For two years he then taught anatomy at Edinburgh. Grady Franklin Stiles Jr. (June 26, 1937 – November 29, 1992) was an American freak show performer and murderer. His deformity was the genetic condition ectrodactyly, in which the fingers and toes are fused together to form claw-like extremities. Because of this, Stiles performed under the stage name "Lobster Boy". Family history According to Grady's father, the Stiles family had a long history of ectrodactyly, dating back to 1840. Grady Stiles Jr. was the fourth child of Grady F. Stiles Sr. and his wife Edna. Capitalizing on his deformity, Grady Stiles Sr. was a sideshow attraction in a traveling carnival. George William Stiles (born 9 August 1961) is an English composer of musicals for the stage. Education From 1974 to 1979, he was educated at Gresham's School in Norfolk. Stiles studied music at Exeter University, where he met his writing partner Anthony Drewe. He graduated in 1983. Collaboration with Anthony Drewe For more than 30 years, Stiles has worked with the lyricist Anthony Drewe. Together they have written eleven shows (see below). Projects currently in development include: ''Soap Dish''; an adaptation of Graham Greene's ''Travels with My Aunt''; and a new project with the director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. Florence Ward Stiles (1897–1981) was an American architect and librarian who in 1939 was appointed the first advisor to women students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She was awarded an architecture degree as a member of MIT's class of 1923. After graduating, she joined the all-woman firm of Howe, Manning & Almy, Inc.
