Steve Thomas (politician)
Steven Caldwell Thomas (born 3 October 1967) is an Australian politician. He is a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, having represented South West Region since 2017, and has been the deputy leader of the party since January 2023. He was previously a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from February 2005 to September 2008 representing the electorate of Capel. Outside politics Thomas was born in Mansfield, Victoria. Prior to entering politics Thomas was a veterinary surgeon and has a degree in veterinary science. Legislative Assembly On entering Parliament Thomas was appointed as acting speaker of the Legislative Assembly (lower house) in March 2005 and was a member of the Public Accounts Committee from April 2005. Thomas was appointed as the shadow minister of the Environment for most of 2006 and from January 2008 acted as the shadow treasurer. The Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch), commonly known as WA Labor, is the Western Australian branch of the Australian Labor Party. It is the current governing party of Western Australia since winning the 2017 election under Mark McGowan. The Western Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia had a leadership spill on 30 January 2023. Libby Mettam defeated David Honey to become the leader of the Liberal Party in Western Australia. Background The March 2021 Western Australian state election saw the Liberal Party win just two seats in the lower house and seven seats in the upper house, a record loss. In the aftermath of the election, David Honey was elected leader of the party and Libby Mettam, the only other lower house Liberal member, was elected deputy leader. As the Liberal Party had less lower house seats than the National Party, Honey did not become the leader of the opposition, but the two parties did form an alliance, whereby Liberal MPs would be part of the shadow cabinet. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 59 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as ''electorates'' or ''seats''. The ''Electoral Distribution Act 1947'' requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. 2017 Western Australian State Election
The 2017 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 11 March 2017 to elect members to the Parliament of Western Australia, including all 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 36 seats in the Legislative Council. The eight-and-a-half-year two-term incumbent Liberal– WA National government, led by Premier Colin Barnett, was defeated in a landslide by the Labor opposition, led by Opposition Leader Mark McGowan. Mick Murray (politician)
Michael Philip Murray (born 26 November 1949) is an Australian former politician who was a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from February 2001 to March 2021. He represented the electorate of Collie from 2001 to 2005 and the electorate of Collie-Preston from 2005 to 2021. Growing up in the small town of Duranillin in the Shire of West Arthur, Murray attended the local primary school before moving to Collie with his parents and completing his education in local state schools. Murray completed his apprenticeship as a mechanic and worked in the North West of Western Australia before settling back in Collie to work in the coal mines. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature. Ultimately, the Liberals were able to form a coalition government with the WA Nationals, supported by three independents. The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions.
