Steve Rodriguez (skateboarder)
Steve Rodriguez (born 1971) is a goofy-footed American skateboarder, skate company owner, skatepark designer, community organizer, and creative services director, who lives and skates in NYC. Rodriguez is a leader in the effort to restore the iconic New York City skate spot: the Brooklyn Banks, a place where Rodriguez spent much time skateboarding. Until it closed for construction in 2010, Rodriguez hosted skate contests at the Banks. Skateboarding Early life Raised in Sayreville, New Jersey, Rodriguez discovered skateboarding around 1983 and started skating not long after. He started skating in New York City as a teen, working for his mom who managed a store in the City. Rodriguez would skate through the city while doing deliveries and running other errands. Far Rockaway
Far Rockaway is a neighborhood on the eastern part of the Rockaway peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. It is the easternmost section of the Rockaways. A skate contest or skateboarding contest or skateboarding competition is a competition between people skateboarding, usually on a designated course or ramp, typically decided by judges' scoring. History The first skate contest took place in 1973 in Hermosa Beach, California, sponsored by Makaha and held at the Pier Avenue Junior High School. In April 26 & 27, 1975, The Zephyr Boys impress the crowd at the Bahne-Cadillac National Championships held as part of the Del Mar Ocean Festival. Coverage from this skate contest propelled the Z-Boys as first skate celebrities. The unique and aggressive style of the Z-Boys caused a major sensation and controversy at the competition. Golconda Skate Park
Golconda Skate Park, known as Fat Kid, is a public skate park in the Downtown Brooklyn/ Fort Greene neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York City, that originated as a DIY skate spot. Built under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, the 18,000 square foot professionally built skate park was completed in 2016 and sits within Golconda Playground. History Located under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, the park originated as a D.I.Y skate park known as Fat Kid or the Fat Kid spot. LES Skatepark
Coleman Playground is a public park on the border between the Chinatown and Lower East Side neighborhoods of Manhattan in New York City. History The park is named in honor of an U.S. Army Corporal Joseph Francis Coleman who died in 1919. Before World War I, the Coleman family lived nearby on Madison Street. Coleman fought in France as a member of the 321st Field Artillery, the 82nd Division of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). Coleman died on June 16, 1919 at Base Hospital in Hoboken, New Jersey, after contracting tuberculosis in the trenches. Exactly six months after Coleman's death, the Board of Aldermen named this playground in his honor. A skate video is a movie of or about skateboarding typically showing new tricks and a series of skateboarders in a montage set to music. History Released in 1965, the short film ''Skaterdater'' is credited as the first film to depict skateboarding and therefore the first ''skate video.'' In 2015, The Berrics campaigned for the film's acceptance into the National Film Registry. However, the Powell Peralta company is often credited as creating the first skate videos proper that were not a part of a fictional film or a documentary. Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. Brooklyn Banks
Brooklyn Banks is the unofficial name for the area under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Banks are an original New York City skate spot, popular amongst the city's skateboarders and BMXers for its unique brick banks and other skateable features. Since the mid 2010s, the Banks have been inaccessible due to the area being used as a storage site for construction on the Brooklyn Bridge.
