Steve Goss
Benjamin Stephenson Goss (November 7, 1949 – October 26, 2015) was an American politician. He served two terms (January 2007 – December 2010) as a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the North Carolina Senate. He represented the 45th Senate district, including constituents in Alexander County, North Carolina, Alexander, Ashe County, North Carolina, Ashe, Watauga County, North Carolina, Watauga, and Wilkes County, North Carolina, Wilkes counties. He was defeated for re-election in 2010 by Republican Dan Soucek. Goss was an ordained Southern Baptist minister and resided in Boone, North Carolina. He has a Bachelor of Science, BS in social science with a minor in education from Appalachian State University and a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He died at his home in Boone from cancer on October 26, 2015, at the age of 65. The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is a Christian denomination based in the United States. It is the world's largest Baptist denomination, and the largest Protestant and second-largest Christian denomination in the United States. The word ''Southern'' in "Southern Baptist Convention" stems from its having been organized in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, by white supremacist Baptists in the Southern United States who were supportive of enslaving Americans of African descent and split from the northern Baptists (known today as the American Baptist Churches USA). Wilkes County is a county located in the US state of North Carolina. It is a part of the state's western mountain region. As of the 2020 census the population was 65,969, in 2010 the census listed the population at 69,340. Its county seat is Wilkesboro, and its largest town is North Wilkesboro. Wilkes County comprises the North Wilkesboro, NC, Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed from parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee) on April 20, 1778, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778.
