Steve Allen (singer)
Steve Allen (born Alan Stephenson) is a New Zealand singer and recording artist who found popularity as a singer during the 1970s. He is also known for the hit song " Join Together", and the song for the television commercial, "Use Your Nana". Background Early on in his career he was the lead guitarist and vocalist with a Wellington group called the Lost Souls. He left the group in 1968 to go solo. The following year he had a single "This Old Man" bw "Just You Wait" on the HMV label. He was credited as Stevie Allen. In 1972 the single "Life On Mars" backed with three David Gates compositions was released. The A side and the medley of "Baby I'm-A Want You", "Everything I Own" and "Diary" on the B side was produced by Don Richardson. In 1973, he was at his peak. He had received the RATA award for Best Male Vocalist. He also had a no 1 hit with his version of The Carpenters hit " Top Of The World". The song that he wrote, Join Together" was a hit in 1973. Deane Waretini (born c. 1946) is a musician from New Zealand. He had a #1 chart hit in 1981 with the song "The Bridge (Deane Waretini song), The Bridge", a Māori language song set to Nini Rosso's tune "Il Silenzio (song), Il Silenzio". Fontana Records is a record label that was started in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records. The independent label distributor Fontana Distribution takes its name from the label. Kim Hart (born 9 May 1960) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter, who had an Australasian hit single in 1980 with "Love at First Night" which reached No.6 on the Australian Kent Music Report. Biography Kim Denise Hart was born in Auckland on 9 May 1960. She was the lead vocalist in the Penrose High School Band, Chalkdust, which entered the 1976 Battle of the Bands competition, where they became finalists. Signed to EMI in 1977 Hart's first single was "You Don't Need Me"/"Born To Wander". This was followed in 1978 with "(You're a) Changed Man"/"You Light Up My Light" and "On My Toes Again"/"How Deep Is Your Love". Hart came second in the New Zealand finals of The South Pacific Song Contest with "On My Toes Again" and she represented New Zealand at the Yamaha Song Festival in Japan. Mandrill Studios was a recording studio in Parnell, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. Many of New Zealand's prominent artists have had their work recorded there. Background The studio was located in the Auckland suburb of Parnell on York Street. It was owned by former 60s pop singers Glyn Tucker, Dave Hurley, along with composer and producer, Gary Daverne. Around 1980, Hurley and Daverne pulled out of the business, leaving Tucker as the sole owner. Viking Records was an independent record label that featured many New Zealand and Polynesian recording artists. Background The company was founded in 1957. In the 1960s, the company was the largest locally owned record label in the South Pacific with its New Zealand head office in Wellington and a branch in Sydney.
