Steuben Glass Works
Steuben Glass is an American art glass manufacturer, founded in the summer of 1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York, which is in Steuben County, from which the company name was derived. Hawkes was the owner of the largest cut glass firm then operating in Corning. Carder was an Englishman (born September 18, 1863) who had many years' experience designing glass for Stevens & Williams in England. Hawkes purchased the glass blanks for his cutting shop from many sources and eventually wanted to start a factory to make the blanks himself. Hawkes convinced Carder to come to Corning and manage such a factory. Carder, who had been passed over for promotion at Stevens and Williams, consented to do so. Refraction Index
In optics, the refractive index (or refraction index) of an optical medium is a dimensionless number that gives the indication of the light bending ability of that medium. The refractive index determines how much the path of light is bent, or refracted, when entering a material. Massimo Vignelli
Massimo Vignelli (; January 10, 1931 – May 27, 2014) was an Italian designer who worked in a number of areas including packaging, houseware, furniture, public signage, and showroom design. He was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, with his wife, Lella Vignelli, Lella. His motto was, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything," which the broad range of his work reflects. Vignelli worked firmly within the modernism, modernist tradition. His style stressed simplicity by using basic geometry, geometric shapes. Life Vignelli studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and later at the Università Iuav di Venezia. Art UK is a cultural, education charity in the United Kingdom, previously known as the Public Catalogue Foundation. Since 2003, it has digitised more than 220,000 paintings by more than 40,000 artists and is now expanding the digital collection to include UK public sculpture. It was founded for the project, completed between 2003 and 2012, of obtaining sufficient rights to enable the public to see images of all the approximately 210,000 oil paintings in public ownership in the United Kingdom. Keith McCarter
Keith McCarter is a Scottish sculptor, with several works on public display. Career McCarter was born in Edinburgh in 1936 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. He received an Andrew Grant Scholarship which allowed him to travel through Europe including Scandinavia, in 1960 and 1961. He then lived in America until 1963, working for Steuben Glass as a designer. Returning to the UK, he was from 1964 to 1968 a visiting lecturer at Hornsey College of Art. He is known for his abstract sculptural relief in concrete, ''Celestial'', which was commissioned by, and from 1969 to 2011 adorned the Southampton headquarters of, Ordnance Survey. Dante Marioni
Dante Marioni (born March 3, 1964 in Mill Valley, California) is an American glass artist. Biography Dante Marioni grew up among many artistic influences. His father, Paul Marioni, was involved in the American studio glass movement and, as a result, Dante was constantly exposed to the glassblowing artists of the San Francisco Bay Area. His uncles are artists, Tom Marioni and Joseph Marioni. In 1979, the Marioni family moved to Seattle and Dante began to study glassblowing at The Glass Eye. He spent summers at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington where his father taught. After graduating from high school, he started to pursue glassblowing as a career; working full-time at The Glass Eye. Beth Lipman
Beth Lipman (born 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a contemporary artist working in glass. She is best known for her glass still-life compositions which reference the work of 16th- and 17th-century European painters. Biography Beth Lipman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1971. She is an only child, and her family primarily lived in York and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania. Her family moved around a bit before she turned 3 or 4. Her mother was a self-taught painter whose collection of books on folk painting influenced Lipman at an early age. At 16 she attended a summer art camp at the Horizons New England Craft Program. James Archibald Houston
James Archibald Houston (June 12, 1921 – April 17, 2005) was a Canadian artist, designer, children's author and filmmaker who played an important role in the recognition of Inuit art and introduced printmaking to the Inuit. Michele Oka Doner (born 1945, Miami Beach, Florida, United States) is an American artist and author who works in a variety of media including sculpture, prints, drawings, functional objects and video. Dan Dailey (glass Artist)
Dan Owen Dailey (born 1947) is an American artist and educator, known for his sculpture. With the support of a team of artists and crafts people, he creates sculptures and functional objects in glass and metal. He has taught at many glass programs and is professor emeritus at the Massachusetts College of Art, where he founded the glass program. Emerging from the studio glass movement initiated by Harvey Littleton, Dailey's work has branched out from the mainstream by the incorporation of metal into many of the sculptures. Additionally, he has worked with several glass companies, for more than twenty years. Kiki Smith
Kiki Smith (born January 18, 1954) is a West German-born American artist whose work has addressed the themes of sex, birth and regeneration.
