Sterrett, Alabama
Sterrett is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. Its population was 712 as of the 2010 census. History Sterrett was named in honor of a prominent local family, which included Alphonso A. Sterrett, who served in the Alabama Legislature. At one point in its history, Sterrett was a center of pottery production in central Alabama. Also known as Jugtown, Sterrett was once home to at least ten potters. The pottery produced here was classified as being part of the East Alabama style of pottery, which used high quality clay and a two-toned glaze decoration. William Hilliard Falkner purchased the Sterrett Pottery Works in 1874 and operated it until 1903. His father, Joel Falkner, was also a potter in Sterrett. Sterrett was once home to Twin Pines Conference Center, which was founded by Robert "Bob" Saunders. Andrew Sterett
Andrew Sterett (January 27, 1778 – January 9, 1807) /sup> was an officer in the United States Navy during the nation's early days. He saw combat during the Quasi-War with France and in the Barbary Wars, commanding the schooner USS ''Enterprise'' in both conflicts. Early life Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Andrew Sterett was the son of John Sterett, a former Revolutionary War captain and a successful shipping merchant. The fourth of ten children, he nevertheless inherited a sizable amount of money. Despite this, he resolved to join the Navy, and was commissioned as a lieutenant on 25 March 1798. The Quasi-War Sterett's first assignment was as Third Lieutenant of the USS ''Constellation'', under Captain Thomas Truxtun, which was sent to do battle with French vessels during the Quasi-War. Cliff Sterrett
Clifford Sterrett (; December 12, 1883 – December 28, 1964) was an American cartoonist best known as the creator of the comic strip ''Polly and Her Pals''. Biography Born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where his father was a druggist, Cliff Sterrett was of Scandinavian ancestry. His mother died when he was two; Cliff and his younger brother Paul were then raised by a maiden aunt, Sallie Johnson, in Alexandria, Minnesota after their father moved to Seattle. With a letter of introduction from a local Episcopal clergyman, the 18-year-old Sterrett moved to New York, where he enrolled in the Chase Art School for two years of study. Dutch Sterrett
Charles Hurlbut "Dutch" Sterrett (October 1, 1889 – December 9, 1965) was a professional baseball player who played 2 seasons for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Sterrett posted a .253 batting average for his major league career, seeing action mostly in the outfield, at first base, and as a catcher. Sterrett also played part of a season for the Venice Tigers of the Pacific Coast League, hitting .299 in thirty-five games. Samuel Sterett
Samuel Sterett (1758 – July 12, 1833) was a Representative from the fourth congressional district of Maryland. Born in Carlisle in the Province of Pennsylvania in 1758, Sterett moved with his parents to Baltimore, in 1761. After he completed preparatory studies, he went to and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Afterwards held several local offices, was a member of the independent company (military) of Baltimore merchants in 1777, and in November 1782 he was appointed private secretary to the President of Congress. Sterett was elected to the Maryland State Senate in 1789. Following his service in the State Senate he was elected to the Second Congress (March 4, 1791 – March 3, 1793), during which he also served as secretary of the Maryland Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery in 1791.
