Sterkspruit Falls
Sterkspruit is a town in the Senqu Local Municipality in the Joe Gqabi District Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The town is located about 45 km south-east of Zastron, 80 km north-east of Aliwal North, and 24 km from the Lesotho border. It takes its name from the Sterkspruit, the watercourse on which it is situated. The name is Afrikaans and means ‘strong stream’. Health The town houses the Empilisweni District Hospital, a public government-funded and managed district hospital. It is a level 1 hospital with 93 usable beds. As it is situated close to Lesotho and Free State borders, it also renders health services to cross-border citizens visiting Sterkspruit. Water quality has been a problem, with 140 babies dying in 2008 after drinking contaminated water. Orange River
The Orange River (from Afrikaans/Dutch: ''Oranjerivier'') is a river in Southern Africa. It is the longest river in South Africa. South African English (SAfrE, SAfrEng, SAE, en-ZA) is the set of English language dialects native to South Africans. History British settlers first arrived in the South African region in 1795, when they established a military holding operation at the Cape Colony. Tele Bridge
Telle Bridge, also spelled as Tele Bridge, is a border post located between South Africa and Lesotho. The actual steel motorbridge spans the Telle River, a tributary of the Orange River that flows across half of South Africa. Sterkspruit Civic Association
The Sterkspruit Civic Association (SCA) is a political party based in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The party wishes the town of Sterkspruit to secede from the Senqu Local Municipality (headquartered in Lady Grey 45 km away) and form its own municipality, citing corruption by the African National Congress-led municipality and the sidelining of Sterkspruit with service delivery. In February 2013, protests led by the organisation resulted in the town shutting down for two weeks. In 2014, the party stated that it would boycott the 2019 South African general election and supporters denied access by Independent Electoral Commission officials to polling stations. The Free State, known as Orange Free State until the 28th of June 1995 when its name was changed, is a province of South Africa. Aliwal North (officially Maletswai) is a town in central South Africa on the banks of the Orange River, Eastern Cape Province. It is a medium-sized commercial centre in the northernmost part of the Eastern Cape. History Sir Harry Smith, then Governor of the Cape Colony, formally founded the small town of Aliwal North in the Cape Province of South Africa in 1850. He named the town "Aliwal North" in memory of his victory over the Sikhs at the Battle of Aliwal during the First Sikh War in India in 1846. Zastron
Zastron is a small agricultural town in the Free State province of South Africa, some 30 km from the border of Lesotho. It is situated at the foot of Aasvoëlberg (Vulture Mountain), named for the rare Cape vultures attracted by a feeding project a short distance out of town. South Africa switched to a closed numbering system effective 16 January 2007.
