Stephen Newport
Stephen Newport (born 5 November 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne and St Kilda in the Australian Football League (AFL). After missing out on a Grand Final appearance in 1987, when Gary Buckenara kicked a goal after the siren to win Hawthorn the Preliminary Final, but he got his chance the following season when he was a half back flanker in the premiership decider. He then had a particularly good year in 1989 when he managed 10 votes in the Brownlow Medal count, joining Jim Stynes as the club's leading vote getter for the season. In the same year he represented the VFL in an interstate match against Tasmania. In the 1990 AFL draft, Newport was traded to St Kilda, in a deal which allowed Allen Jakovich to join Melbourne. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Gary Buckenara
Gary William Buckenara (born 3 July 1958) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Subiaco Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Renowned for his superb high marking and kicking skills, whether passing to teammates or shooting for goal, as well as his performances in "big games", Buckenara is one of a handful of footballers to be named in two separate Teams of the Century, both on the half-forward flank. After The Siren Kicks In Australian Rules Football
In Australian rules football, if a player takes a mark or is awarded a free kick before the siren sounds to end a quarter, and the siren sounds before the player takes a set shot, the player is allowed to take the kick after the siren. Often, the result of this kick is of little consequence, but if the player is within range of goal, any score will count towards the final result. The right to take a set shot after the final bell was enshrined in the Laws of the Game prior to the 1889 season; prior to this, the ball was declared dead (and any opportunity for a set shot lost) once the bell sounded. Jim Stynes
James Stynes OAM (23 April 196620 March 2012) was an Irish-born footballer who converted from Gaelic football to Australian rules football. Playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), he went on to become one of the game's most prominent figures, breaking the record for most consecutive games of VFL/AFL football (244) and winning the sport's highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, in 1991. Off the field, he was a notable AFL administrator, philanthropist, charity worker and writer. 1990 AFL Draft
The 1990 AFL draft was the 5th annual draft of Australian rules footballers to the 14 clubs in the Australian Football League. It consisted of the national draft held at the end of the 1990 season, the pre-season draft held before the 1991 AFL season, and a mid-season draft. Clubs receive picks based on the reverse of the position in which they finish on the ladder during the season. This was introduced as an equalisation strategy in response to the increasing transfer fees and player salaries. National draft rules The minimum draft age for the 1990 national draft was 16. Allen Jakovich
Allen John Jakovich () (born 21 March 1968) is a retired Australian rules football player. Jakovich was a prolific full forward and is notable for kicking 208 goals in his 54 Australian Football League matches, an average of 3.85 per game, for Melbourne and Footscray. He and his younger brother, Glen Jakovich, both began their AFL careers in the 1990 AFL Draft. Jakovich grew up in Western Australia and has also played football with clubs in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria. He is of Croatian descent.
