Stephen Kudla
Stephen S. Kudla (born 1950 Caracas, Venezuela) is an American mathematician working in arithmetic geometry and automorphic forms. He is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto. Life After receiving his doctorate, Kudla spent a year at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, following which he joined the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park. Since 2006, he has been a Canada Research Chair Professor at the University of Toronto. In 1997, he discovered relationships between the Fourier coefficients of derivatives of Siegel Eisenstein series and arithmetic invariants of Shimura varieties (heights pairings of arithmetic cycles). He was a Sloan Fellow in 1981, received the Max-Planck Research Award in 2000, and the Jeffery–Williams Prize of the Canadian Mathematical Society in 2009. Shimura Variety
In number theory, a Shimura variety is a higher-dimensional analogue of a modular curve that arises as a quotient variety of a Hermitian symmetric space by a congruence subgroup of a reductive algebraic group defined over Q. Shimura varieties are not algebraic varieties but are families of algebraic varieties. Shimura curves are the one-dimensional Shimura varieties. Hilbert modular surfaces and Siegel modular varieties are among the best known classes of Shimura varieties. Special instances of Shimura varieties were originally introduced by Goro Shimura in the course of his generalization of the complex multiplication theory. Shimura showed that while initially defined analytically, they are arithmetic objects, in the sense that they admit models defined over a number field, the reflex field of the Shimura variety. The Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics (german: Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach) is a center for mathematical research in Oberwolfach, Germany. The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) is a mathematical institute created in 1996 by universities in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States to promote research and excellence in all areas of the mathematical sciences. It provides training and support for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers hosted at member institutions.
