Stephen Kaye
Stephen William Kaye (born 1951) is a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He was appointed to the bench on 16 December 2003, serving as a judge of the Trial Division until his appointment the Court of Appeal in 2015. On 1 February 2022 the Attorney General of the Victorian Government announced the end of his term from the Court of Appeal. Kaye is the son of William Kaye, who was also a Supreme Court judge. His paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. Like his father, Kaye attended Scotch College, where he was dux in 1968. William Kaye (judge)
William (Bill) Kaye AO QC (8 February 1919 – 12 May 2012) was an Australian lawyer and judge who served on the Supreme Court of Victoria from 1972 to 1990. Kaye was born in Melbourne to Chana (née Reizel) and Zelman Kaye. His parents were Ukrainian-Jewish immigrants originally from Berdiansk, and his father's original name was Shlomo Komesaroff. Kaye attended Scotch College before going on to study law the University of Melbourne. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1941, and during the war served on HMAS ''Warrego'' and ''Cowra''. He married Henrietta Ellinson while on leave in 1943; they had four children together, including Justice Stephen Kaye. Kaye was admitted to the bar in 1946, and came to specialise in personal injury cases and in criminal and commercial law. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1962, and in 1971 served on the royal commission into the collapse of the West Gate Bridge. Supreme Court Of Victoria
The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria. Founded in 1852, it is a superior court of common law and equity, with unlimited and inherent jurisdiction within the state. The Supreme Court comprises two divisions: the Trial Division, which oversees its original jurisdiction, and the Court of Appeal, which deals with its appellate jurisdiction, and is frequently referred to as a court in its own right. Although the Supreme Court is theoretically vested with unlimited jurisdiction, it generally only hears, at trial, criminal cases in instances of murder, manslaughter or treason, and civil cases where the statement of claim is in excess of the Magistrates' Court limit of $100,000.
