Stephen Herbert Gatty
Sir Stephen Herbert Gatty (1849-1922) was the Chief Justice of Gibraltar from 16 January 1895 to 1905. He was formerly a judge of the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements. On December 19, 1904, he was named a Knight Bachelor. Personal life Gatty was the son of Alfred Gatty and Margaret Gatty. He married firstly Alice Georgina Rawlinson (1849-1894) on August 29, 1876; they had no issue. Gatty then married Katharine Morrison (1869-1949), daughter of Alfred Morrison, on February 21, 1905. Their children were Hester Gatty (1906-1973), wife of Siegfried Sassoon, Oliver Gatty Oliver Gatty (5 November 1907 – 5 June 1940) was a British chemist and psychical researcher. Chief Justice Of Gibraltar
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar is one of the four judges who make up the supreme court of Gibraltar. Previously the Chief Justice was appointed by the Governor of Gibraltar on the advice of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Under the 2006 Constitution the Governor, on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, makes the appointment on behalf of the Monarch. As a judge of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice is responsible for hearing civil and criminal proceedings, including Family Jurisdiction, Court of Protection, Admiralty Jurisdiction and Ordinary (Chancery) Jurisdiction, as well as appeals from the Magistrates' Court. Alfred Gatty
Alfred Gatty (18 April 1813 – 20 January 1903) was a Church of England vicar and author. He was born in London to Robert Gatty, a solicitor, and Margaret Jones. In 1831 he entered Exeter College, Oxford, graduating in 1836. He was ordained a deacon in 1837 and was appointed as curate of Bellerby in the North Riding of Yorkshire. He was ordained priest in 1838, and was appointed vicar of Ecclesfield on 23 September 1839, a position he held until his death. In 1861 he was appointed as rural dean and in 1862 as subdean of York Minster. Margaret Gatty
Margaret Gatty ( Scott; 3 June 1809 – 4 October 1873) was an English children's author and writer on marine biology. In some writings she argues against Charles Darwin's ''Origin of Species''. She became a popular writer of tales for young people, which she hoped would influence adult minds as well. Among her other books are ''Parables from Nature'', ''Worlds not Realized'', ''Proverbs Illustrated'', and ''Aunt Judy's Tales''. She edited ''Aunt Judy's Magazine'', a family publication written by various family members. Science Gatty became fascinated by marine biology through contact with a second cousin, Charles Henry Gatty, a Royal Society member. There may also have been influence from William Henry Harvey, whom she met while convalescing in Hastings in 1848. Alfred Morrison (1821 – 22 December 1897) was an English collector, known for his interest in works of art, autographs and manuscripts. Life The second son of James Morrison (1790–1857) the textile businessman, he inherited from his father a large fortune. He went to the University of Edinburgh, and spent a student year at Trinity College, Cambridge, travelled, and later unsuccessfully stood for parliament. Morrison was High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1857. He died at Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire, on 22 December 1897, at the age of 76. Works Morrison's houses at Fonthill and on Carlton House Terrace, Westminster, contained Persian carpets, Chinese porcelain, Greek gems and gold work, and miniatures. Siegfried Loraine Sassoon (8 September 1886 – 1 September 1967) was an English war poet, writer, and soldier. Oliver Gatty (5 November 1907 – 5 June 1940) was a British chemist and psychical researcher. Career Gatty was born in Kensington, Middlesex. He was the second child and first son of Stephen Herbert Gatty and his second wife, Katharine Morrison, daughter of Alfred Morrison. He worked at Rothamsted Experimental Station and then under Eric Rideal, Professor of Colloid Science at University of Cambridge.
