Stephen Doyle (footballer)
Stephen Doyle (born 13 July 1981) is a South Australian Australian rules football player with the Sydney Swans of the Australian Football League (AFL). Doyle was selected by the Swans under the father-son rule in the 1999 National Draft, as his father Robert had played 77 games for South Melbourne. The tall ruckman made his debut in 2000, but recurring ankle and knee injuries meant that he did not manage to play more than three games in a row in his first four seasons. He had a relatively injury-free season in 2004, but did not stand out greatly. A knee injury in the first round in 2005 ruled him out of the rest of the Swans' premiership-winning season. In 2006, following the retirement of premier ruckman Jason Ball, Doyle arrived at the end of the season in working order. Partnering Darren Jolly in the Grand Final, Doyle was the Swans better ruckman in their narrow loss to the West Coast Eagles. Ruckman (Australian Rules Football Position)
In Australian rules football, a ruckman or ruckwoman is typically a tall and athletic player who contests at centre bounces and stoppages (such as boundary throw-ins and ball-ups). The ruckman is one of the most important players on the field. They are often key to coaching strategy and winning centre clearances which result in the most goal kicking opportunities (inside 50s). The role of the ruckman in Australian rules is similar to a lock in rugby union contesting a line-out. The key differences are that with the exception of boundary throw-ins, the ball is almost always thrown straight up high into the air rather than horizontally, so in this respect, the ruckman is similar to a basketball centre. Peter Everitt
Peter "Spida" Everitt (born 3 May 1974) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club, Hawthorn Football Club and Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He played for St Kilda from 1993 to 2002, Hawthorn from 2003 to 2006, and Sydney in 2007 and 2008. He finished his career having played 291 games in the AFL. Jason Ball (Australian Footballer)
Jason Ball (born 21 November 1972) is a former Australian rules football player with the West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). The ruckman made his AFL debut for West Coast in 1992, and went on to play 103 games for them, scoring 114 goals, being part of the 1994 premiership side and winning the 1995 leading goal-kicker award. He was traded to Sydney after the 1999 season and went on to play 90 games for them. During the 2005 finals series, he announced he would retire at the end of the season. Robert Doyle (footballer)
Robert Doyle (born 14 January 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Doyle, a ruckman, was a South Melbourne player from under-19 level and made his senior debut in 1969. Also used in key positions, Doyle had his most productive season in 1973 when he played 20 games. Playing as a forward against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval in 1974, Doyle kicked a career high five goals, but was overshadowed by Sam Kekovich, who kicked 10 majors. He appeared in the opening seven rounds of the 1975 VFL season and then transferred to Port Melbourne to play out the year.
